For the love of GOD what is the deal with Vista Defrag?????

I did a search on this and nothing comes up, why? How long does Vista take to defrag? I found on line that someone took 14 hours to defrag a virtually empty hard drive. I think Bill needs to get this one fixed because it seems a step back on performance. My system is fast but can't speed this program up. Let me know your experiences with this one because it is driving me crazy!!!

Hi George. . .

Good to have you back at TSF again.

Yes, I also find the Vista defrag to be ... well ... slow. Same with Windows Explorer.

What I usually do is run a defrag on numerous large individual files that I use daily with the SysInternals utility program Contig v1.54 by Mark Russinovich, which can be downloaded from Microsoft TechNet HERE. SysInternals is a wholly owned subsidiary of Microsoft - since 2006.l

Personally, I have very little use these days for the Vista defrag utility as I re-install Vista often (I need a pristine copy for testing software).

Hope this is of some help to you.

Regards. . .

Re: For the love of GOD what is the deal with Vista Defrag?????

My two cents: i've never had a problem with Vista defrag though I have only used it a few times but each time I have used it, it didn't take too long.

However, in terms of ability, it isn't a patch on Perfect Disk...which is not only faster but defrags more files.

I tried it and it did not do anything. Is there something I'm missing?

Hi George...

When you say that the SysInternals program did nothing - is it because there was no report or no apparent defragmentation - or both?

I ran contig v1.54 and did not find much, but would not expect to as there are not that many fragmented files due to a recent Vista install. How long ago did you defrag your HDD?

Try this command from the DOS-type command prompt box -

Bring up an ELEVATED command prompt ( START | type cmd.exe | right-click on cmd.exe up top | select Run as Administrator | answer the UAC prompt - Continue/enter Admin password )

Now... copy/paste the following into the "DOS" command prompt box - EXACTLY as it appears (this assumes that the SysInternals program is on the d: drive and in a folder called SysInternals). This will defragment the files within the ProgramData folder. Type/paste one line at a time, then press enter after each.

d:
cd\
cd\SysInternals
contig -v -a -s c:\programdata\*.*>c:\$contig-04-19-08.txt & start notepad c:\$contig-04-19-08.txt

If you have problems with the paste using ctrl-v, then right-click on the top of the "DOS" command prompt box then select "Edit" then select paste.

Either way, a notepad should appear with the registry key contents inside it - if unfamiliar to you, you will see "%" signs and recognizable folder names as well as letter/numbers mixed together. This is OK. Then copy all and paste results in your next post and I'll take a look.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Regards. . .

Thanks I will also give it a try. It seems that the virtual disc is faster but this will give me something to compare it to.

Re: For the love of GOD what is the deal with Vista Defrag?????

I'm doing a first time defrag on a 500G hard drive - good god in heaven it is unreasonable.
It has been running 5 hours now and I don't even know how far along it is.

This is definately a step back for fragmentation - gimme a darned abacus.

Re: For the love of GOD what is the deal with Vista Defrag?????

Try the non GUI defrag, Its alot faster

1. Click start and type 'CMD'

2. Right click and run as administrator

3. In Command Prompt type the following and hit enter

defrag c: -v -r

You should find that the command prompt will not respond until the defrag is done however it will return the results of the defrag.

Regards

Craig
