Re: Please Help, blue screen probs!
Hi savman2 - Welcome to the Tech Support Forum - Vista Support! I see that you have Vista SP1 installed - and that the information that you listed is from your 6th Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) today alone. If you are in the US Eastern Time zone, that would be one BSOD every 35 minutes. Regardless of where you are, one BSOD a day is one too many. So let's see if we can get to the root cause of your system failure. BSODs usually leave memory dumps behind. I see that you have at least one. Please get it and ALL others for me and I'll take a look at them to see if a probable cause of the BSODs can be determined. The memory dump files should be located in c:\windows\minidump\ - the dump files will be named similar to "Mini041508-01.dmp". Get them all - regardless of the number. Two other items that I would like are: (1) A Belarc Advisor report saved in "mht" format (Top right of Internet Explorer screen; Page; Save as; save as mht), as a web page (HTML) or as a Word document. You can download Belarc HERE; (2) A DXDiag report - START | type dxdiag into the Start Search box | right-click on dxdiag.exe | select Run as Administrator | respond to User Access Control prompt. Then save this report as a text file. Then zip up all of the memory dump files and the reports and send them to me at the two Email addresses that I provided to you in my PM. Very important - please be sure to include you screen name in the subject area and a link to this thread in the body of the email. If not, my system may consider the email to be SPAM and will delete it. Please be patient as I have other memory dumps to process. Should you have any questions regarding the aforementioned, please POST again or send me a PM. Regards. . . jcgriff2 Last edited by jcgriff2; 04-15-2008 at 02:38 AM. |

Re: Please Help, blue screen probs!
I had a similar problem some time ago and read on another forum that it could be due to too much thermal paste on the CPU. So I redid the thermal paste and no more problems with blue screen. I used diposable gloves to get it thin and even, much easier than a spatula.

Hi savman2 - I have only received two minidumps - yet the info that I highlighted in red tells me you had at least six BSODs on April 15. Please find the others and send them to me via email. Please remember to place your screen name in the subject area of the email and a link to this thread in the body. So far, I can tell you that your audio driver is responsible for at least one of the BSODs. Check the Device Manager for any red/yellow flags. What is the manufacturer and model of your system? For some reason it is not showing this information in the reports that you sent to me. Also, I know that you have Vista SP1 installed. However, you are missing 24 (yes 2-4) critical/important Windows Updates. Please go to the Windows Updates section of the Control Panel and check to see if updates are available. Also check the installed updates area to see if any have failed. Thanks. . . jcgriff2 |

Re: Please Help, blue screen probs!
Hi. . . I received your PM and responded, but I believe you logged off before receiving it. You mentioned that only 2 mini-dump files were sent because of a re-format and re-install of Vista. Their names are Mini041508-01.dmp and Mini041508-02.dmp. This, coupled with information in your Belarc report, leaves me with additional questions: 1. Your original post indicates (to me) that there were 6 BSODs on April 15, 2008 alone - based on the filename of "Mini041508-06[.dmp]. A re-format and re-install of Vista back to the default Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) factory settings would wipe out the Minidump folder - so the counter on the memory dumps would start with "01". The dumps that you sent me are in fact numbered 01 and 02. So... where did the information in your original post come from? My guess is that it was before the re-install of the OS. 2. Speaking of the OS - I see that you have an OEM version of Windows Vista Ultimate installed - which is fine. However, the Vista "hidden" Administrator account shows it was originally activated on November 2, 2006. This almost looks to me to be an XP upgrade to Vista. I know that Vista came out publicly in January 2007, but OEM's did have it prior to that. When did you buy your system? 3. As I said in #2 - you have Vista Ultimate - build 6000. This means that it has not been upgraded with Vista Service Pack 1 (SP1) yet. You also are missing 24 Vista Windows Updates - in fact you have no Windows Updates installed on your system at all - at least based on the information that I have access to. Pre-Vista SP1 should have over 70 Windows Updates available to be installed (including Windows Defender, Internet Explorer 7, etc...). Why Belarc is showing only 24 missing - when none are listed as installed - is a mystery to me right now. Please check your Windows Updates via the Control Panel and let me know if there are any available to you. Your setting may be on "manual" instead of "automatic". Regards. . . jcgriff2 |

Re: Please Help, blue screen probs!
System is now upgraded to SP1, all drivers are curently upto date acording to the device manager!
As for my OEM Vista Ultimate it was purchased in mid 2007, and has a hologram on this indicates this is a genuine copy! The Mini041508-06[.dmp] file was pre-re-install! Hope this all helps! |

Hi savman2 - Vista SP1 installed - Great News! Now I understand why some of the results from the memory dumps are so different from the error codes listed in your first post - a re-install of Vista occurred after those six BSODs. That's fine - one mystery cleared up. Also good to hear about your genuine version of Windows Vista Ultimate. It may be possible that the system "sat" around since November 2006 - before your purchase in mid 2007 - unlikely, but possible nonetheless. I would still be interested to know where you bought it from - retail store, via Internet, mail order, etc... - that is if you don't mind. I did some checking here as well - this laptop that I am on now was purchased in the State of California in July 2007 from an electronics store chain that operates mostly in the Western and Mid-West United States. My Administrator account was activated in April 2007 - obviously when Vista was pre-installed on it. Another laptop here has a six-month lag time between the activation of the Admin account and the date of purchase. Another is just one month. For piece of mind (mine!!) check and see if you have a folder named "Windows.old" on your computer. I will have the full results from the two BSODs two by tomorrow - I can tell you that that one was a Windows Kernel driver and the other seems to be related to audio. I know that you have checked Device Manager and all is clear - is everything OK with your audio as far as you know? Regards. . . jcgriff2 (JC) Last edited by jcgriff2; 04-18-2008 at 04:43 PM. |

Re: Please Help, blue screen probs!
Hi P - Apologies for the delay with the BSOD results, but I needed clarification on some items that I was seeing. Here are the results: Code:
04/15/2008 04:32 PM ks.sys 139,952 Mini041508-01.dmp 04/15/2008 04:57 PM ntkrpamp.exe 139,952 Mini041508-02.dmp The reason that I wanted extra time and had questions related to your system, Vista SP1, Windows Updates, audio, etc... is that I found the names of three non-Microsoft audio drivers within the memory dumps that I believe to be a secondary cause of the BSODs. They are: • adihdaud.sys - SoundMAX Digital HD Audio Driver by Analog Devices, Inc. • senfilt.sys - Sensaura WDM 3D Audio Driver • aeaudio.sys - Noise cancellation driver from Andrea Electronics, Inc. Now... the primary cause of the first BSOD ks.sys was known by Microsoft to have some problems and was apparently corrected in Vista SP1. The other NT Kernel file ntkrpamp.sys has also been updated in SP1. Although these two files were listed as the primary probable cause of the BSODs, I suspect that the secondary cause - the three audio related drivers above - may have actually caused the Microsoft drivers to falter. You said that you checked the Device Manager - but please go back and check again - specifically the sound/audio area. The three drivers listed above all have dates from 2006 on them. Check the dates in Device Manger to see if they have been updated. Have you had any issues related to sound with your system? It is now entirely possible that SP1 has taken care of these problems - but I don't know that for a fact. The common denominator here is audio, audio, audio. If you still experience problems - please let me know. Regards. . . jcgriff2 (JC) |
