Question Unable to download windows updates

I am having several problems with Vista, on an Acer Aspire 5100. First, when I turn it on, I receive a message "ATI External Event Utility EXE Module has stopped working" I have reinstalled all of my ATI drivers, still nothing, and cant I find any working solutions anywhere online.

The other problem is that I cant download any updates through Windows Update, with an error code "80246008". This points to a problem with the BITS service. This service refuses to start, with an error message "1068". All of its dependencies are working though, except COM+ Event System, which, when I force it to start, it stops again, saying it isn't needed. I have checked several Knowledge Base articles on this, and according to them, BITS should be working, I cant find a reason for it not to. All of these services I have set to automatically start, and restarted my computer, but they still don't start, or stay running.

I am posting these two problems in the same thread because they started at the same time, for apparently no reason. I think they are connected, but don't know how.

Any help is appreciated.

Re: Unable to download windows updates

I am running AVG free. I would never let Norton touch any of my computers

Re: Unable to download windows updates

No, nothing there helped, and none of the error codes on that page match any of the errors I'm getting.

Re: Unable to download windows updates

I am also running AVG and the only way the update works on this machine is to turn Auto update. set the update time an hour ahead and let it download and install.
