Frequent reboots needed on Vista

I have Windows Vista (I had no choice in the matter) and after a while of surfing graphics-heavy web sites, the right click won't work and I can't open new windows. I always have to reboot the get the system working properly again. Is it eating up too much memory or what? Is there any way to prevent this from happening over and over again? Thanks.

Re: Frequent reboots needed on Vista

Might be what is called a "memory leak", which is caused by poor programming that keeps the memory a program used "occupied" even after that program has closed. Enough of those and you do run out of memory.

Check Task Manager (ctrl+alt+del) and report (under performance) the total, cached & free Physical Memory. The number or processes also.

Are you using Internet Explorer ?

Could also be a heat issue.

Yes, I am using Internet Explorer 7.0.6. I can list those things you want me to check, but shouldn't I also do it when I actually am having the problem? It's not happening right now but here it is:

Total is 1013, cached is 401 and free is 9. Processes running are 68. Thanks. for your help.

I have an Intel Pentium D CPU 2.8 Ghz with 1014 RAM. I currently have 143 GB free of 223 GB total.

Thanks.

Re: Frequent reboots needed on Vista

68 processes seem a tad high. I have 51. Problem with Vista is that there are so many more processes running (than XP) that it's difficult to have a User post a screen-shot or report for evaluation.

Try running MSCONFIG and turn off as many unnecessary start-up and services items and see if the problem goes away.

One possiblity is malware, another is a poorly programmed software causing a memory leak.

Another possiblity is heat. Pentium D's run how.

Also I think 1 Gbyte of RAM is light. Vista specs call for twice that.

What video card do you have ?

First off, I have no idea which things I can discontinue. The services I recognize are needed, and the ones I don't are things I have no idea about.

The computer came with the Ram and Vista. I have had nothing but problems since I got it. My printer doesn't work the way it used to and some of my other software programs don't run on Vista. I wonder if putting out a new operating system that's not compatible with some of the existing hardware and software is a conspiracy by Microsoft and other companies to get people to have to replace all their electronics.

I'm not sure where to look for the video card. Would it be under device manager?

Thanks.
