Windows Vista Not connecting to DSL

I have windows vista, and for about 4 months my internet would work fine. I would just open my laptop, and my dsl modem would get a connection. And I called my dsl provider and they couldnt figure out what was wrong, so now everytime i want to get connected to the internet, i have to manually connect myself to my dsl provider. If i dont do that, then i dont have a connection and they said it may be something with my computer. Any suggestions to make it work how it use to?

wireless or cable? are you behind a router?
