Network + DVD Issues with Vista

Alright, i recently upgraded from Xp to Vista.

Ever since I've installed Vista, my DVD Drive, and onboard network adapter fails to show up in both My Computer and in Device Manager. A few times they have reappeared on reboot, to just dissapear again a few minutes to half an hour later. It sometimes seems as soon as I try and access the DVD-Drive it loses connection with the DVD Drive and the network. I had no such problems in XP.

List of my components are

Windows Vista 64-bit
Intel Quad-Core Q6600 2.4 Gigahertz
Asus P5K-SE motherboard
Palit Geforce 8600GT Graphics card
2x1-gig Corsair 667mhz
2x1-gig Corsair 800mhz
120gig SATA Western Digital Drive (operating system drive)
320gig SATA Western Digital Drive (storage drive)
600-watt Thermaltake Tough Power PSU
LG DVD combo drive

If i need more info on system just tell me.

If anyone could help me fix this problem, i'd be much obliged, and feel free to ask for more information. I've checked for hardware incompatibility issues and found none.

On further investigation sometimes the DVD Drive does not appear in BIOS.

Re: Network + DVD Issues with Vista

I check my event view logger and find that my LG HL-DT-ST DVD-RAM GSA-H10N drive has a plug and play error.

The error says...

"The device 'HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GSA-H10N ATA Device' (IDE\CdRomHL-DT-ST_DVDRAM_GSA-H10N________________JL10____\6&136aa46b&0&0.1.0) disappeared from the system without first being prepared for removal."

I hope this will give more clues, ill also post in cd drives.

My network onboard still doesn't appear but neither does it show any errors so im wondering if it would be a dragon in Vista because the DVD Drive doesnt work. The hard drive is also being constantly accessed on idle everytime the Drive disappears.

Vista failing Plug and Play error with DVD Drive

Hey i been getting an issue (ive also posted in vista part of forums, more detailed story can be found there.... http://www.techsupportforum.com/micr...ues-vista.html).

"The device 'HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GSA-H10N ATA Device' (IDE\CdRomHL-DT-ST_DVDRAM_GSA-H10N________________JL10____\6&136aa46b&0&0.1.0) disappeared from the system without first being prepared for removal."

This means that its not showing in device manager, My computer, and for some reason Vista also does it to my onboard networking. Everytime i plug in a USB flash drive, the dvd player spins up a bit then stops doing everything. While this is happening the harddrive is being constantly accessed, when im not doing anything.

Re: Vista failing Plug and Play error with DVD Drive

I'll address a couple of your questions. First you can blame autorun for scanning it's contents like crazy. This can happen when the machine detects a new device or simply inserting a new cd or dvd. In vista there is a service called "windows search" I turn it off every time. With it running, your HD with have a ton of activity without you doing a thing.

Now as for disappearing cd / dvd drives and perhaps networking.

Is your machine overclocked by chance? My gigabyte board suffers from both issues if I clocked it passed 2.66ghz. The sata actually isn't detected and the network card will hose itself but not the OS shortly after.

Now assuming it's not an OC issue, how is your power supply situation? Do you have enough juice to drive the hardware inside? Anything changed recently since the time this issue didn't exist?

Only time I've seen the disappearance message regarding an internal drive is if it is failing or a faulty 4 prong power or perhaps even loose. If the logic card on the drive is failing, you maybe SOL, but you mention the network as well which is sort of interesting. They don't have anything to do with each other and the flash drive is a USB device. typically onboard networking is tied to the pci-e controller in at least modern boards. Flash drive is just another USB devicel Of course my advice off the record is "upgrade" to windows XP, yes that's a joke, but in terms of headaches, it's an upgrade over Vista. I'd like to see your reply regarding OC, Power, etc. Anything out of the ordinary in your machine like 4 hard drives or SLI Video or something consuming a ton of power?

Re: Vista failing Plug and Play error with DVD Drive

Alright I just "upgraded" to XP ;)

No my system is not overclocked, and I just bought brand new 600-watt power supply, I still have plenty of juice available after working it all out. =)

I just found out something interesting in installing xp though. It seems when I plug in my flash drive, Windows loses my DVD Drive, and so does bios. I have other usb devices plugged in and they dont create the same issue. I still have my ethernet card show up in device manager now for Windows though, but maybe because drivers aren't fully installed. I'll continue installing the drivers, just yeah accidentally stumbled onto the whole USB flash stick creating the issue. Ever heard of this problem before?

Re: Network + DVD Issues with Vista

Yeah I have, all drivers were installed. I went to the mainboard company and got the latest chipset drivers, and LAN.

Re: Network + DVD Issues with Vista

Well from the error messages you posted, I can pretty much rule out that your DVD drive is USB based. It looks like IDE to me. Why the IDE DVD and your USB flash drive conflict is a strange cookie.

With very little effort you could try this one thing. Get into administrative tools, and choose computer management. In there is disk management.

Goto your DVD drive and right click on it and choose change/add drive letter. Pick another letter. You can always switch is back. I don't see this often but once in a while I've encountered an error message basically saying. Sorry cannot install that drive and a local device is already using it.

I'm digging pretty deep on this one for a quick fix. Maybe someone out here can think of something I'm not? Are you plugging the flash into ports in the front of the case? Just a thought if you accidentally wired those plugs to the motherboard reversed or something. I've seen two different kind of wiring schemes with cases. The double pin version you can't mess up, but the single 5 or so pin version can easily be reversed. Again. Reaching into left field again.

But give it a go. Neither require much effort. Take your flash and insert it into a USB port that is onboard, not even a card slot jumped to the board. If your flash drive is plugged into a monitor, it's the same theory. Move it for this test.

Good luck.
