Re: Vista in safe mode HELP!
Hi Steve
Forget about working in Safe Mode, & get things working normally. Safe Mode is not in any way designed for everyday use: it's for troubleshooting and system maintenance. Trying to run a program like Ventrilo in Safe Mode is just not a good idea. Not sure that I'd recommend a program that doesn't officially support Vista either. But it can be made to work, with Vista booted normally. If there are specific games that you'd like to get Ventrilo working with, visit their forums for specialized tips for each game. For general setup, it helps to have the main executables set to "run as administrator" (it generally helps to right-click and select this when installing software not explicitly written to be compatible with Vista --- select "run as administrator" for the installer, too). Other hurdles are getting your firewall settings squared away - but that's fairly basic stuff. I would imagine the connection issues you mention are related to firewall setup. Check out the help files if you are using the built-in Windows Firewall --- it's fairly simple to set up exclusions for traffic to be unblocked for certain sites and servers. (I'll assume the trouble was in your firewall setup, and not in the setup for a hardware firewall in either a router or a gateway device with a router built-in = because you were able to connect from "Safe Mode with Networking"). If you've a third-party firewall, refer to the manual for guidance -- router setup is easier today than ever. Best of luck . . . Gary PS .. for some examples of tips for getting Ventrilo to work in Vista, here are some links from various gaming sites: --- http://www.vistax64.com/vista-games/...icrophone.html --- http://vnboards.ign.com/gawaine/b20708/106050326/p1/?11 --- http://www.vistax64.com/vista-games/...mes-vista.html --- http://www.vistax64.com/vista-games/...icrophone.html

Re: Vista in safe mode HELP!
Hi. . .
A few questions, please. . . 1. Do you use the same user account/password to log into SAFEMODE as you do when logging into Vista via a normal boot? 2. Have you checked the Event Viewer for errors surrounding the time periods in question? I suspect that you may find the phrase <access denied> on something related to this situation. As OldGrayGary mentioned, check the firewall. I have seen the firewall settings cause this one too many times. 3. Have you ever used a firewall besides Windows Firewall? 4. What is your antivirus package? regards. . . jcgriff2 |

Re: Vista in safe mode HELP!
Hi again all
Steve -- by all means, if you've been Internet-connected for any length of time without any sort of firewall protection up, turn on (or reinstall) whatever firewall option you have, and start some malware scans on a 'thorough' settings as the scanner will allow. Should you find evidence of serious infection, try the 5-Step Security Checklist here at Tech Support Forums --- http://www.techsupportforum.com/secu...oval-help.html It's not unusual for malware infection to tangle Internet & networking connectivity. Should it turn out that your Ventrilo connectivity troubles are quite recent, and you come up clean in the 5-Step Security Checklist ... an option you have to restoring the settings that worked is to use Vista's built-in System Restore - selecting a restore point from before Ventrilo stopped working. Just type System Restore into the Start Search box on the Vista Start Menu . . . it has a decent Help file with reasonable detail. But scan for malware first. Only use System Restore if you are confident that the restore point is malware-free. I like jc's recommendation to check the EventViewer logs, too, should you want to pinpoint if a particular error can reveal the cause of the mayhem. It's not a bad idea to get in the habit of inspecting the logs from time-to-time, to help get a jump on any problems that might be developing. Best of luck . . . Gary
