Virus protection does not turn on when I boot Vista
As per the topic. When I turn on my laptop I get an alert from Vista telling me that my virus protection has been turned off. The security center does not allow me to turn on virus protection.
I use Trend Micro Officescan, and the only way for me to start the program since encountering the initial problem has been to run it as a new task via Task Manager. When I finally get it running, however, I am unable to perform a spyware scan (virus scan is ok). WHat could the problem be, and what can I do about it? |

Re: Virus protection does not turn on when I boot Vista
sounds like either a virus or a bad infestation of something else has gotten ahold of your laptop. try downloading avg 7.5 free and run a full system scan once u update it. avg is one of the best anti-virus programs out there, and its free. it should be able to catch anything on ur comp... now as far as spyware, adware, malware...ect. download AdAware personal edition and do the same... after all of that... try ur officescan, and see if its better. good luck!

Re: Virus protection does not turn on when I boot Vista
This happens to me a lot with AVG. It may be that malware has delibarately messed with it, or it just went bad on it's own.
What I do is run a "Repair" via Add/Remove Programs. That usually fixes it. If you don't get that option, try uninstalling it & then reinstalling it. however, on the chance that malware did cause the problem, I would cross-check your status with either trendmicro's housecall or kaspersky's on-line scanner. |

Re: Virus protection does not turn on when I boot Vista
DLed AVG free and AdAware. A scan with AdAware found one threat (and 254 incidences of trackers) which I deleted. Now running AVG scan but thus far no threats detected. I think I'll ignore the Trend Micro client. I used AVG before that and I only switched to TM because it came with the laptop.

Re: Virus protection does not turn on when I boot Vista
I have found that Vista sometimes gives a "false" message when booting up by indicating that the Antivirus program is not running. When one checks the antivirus, it is running indeed. I have found this with Antivirus programs that are Vista compatible also.
I have found this with AVG Free, AVG Pro, AVG Internet Security, CA, McAfee, but can't recall it happening with Norton. JoshTong, you must make sure that your version of Officescan is Vista compatible. The AVG Free is a good bet to go with. I use either AVG Free or AVG Pro with Windows Defender for my clients. The great thing with any AVG product, one can download definition updates, burn to CD and do manual updates on PC's not hooked up to the 'net. |
