hard drive help

im running vista , and i have 1 sata drive and 1 ide drive
the problem is when i boot the computer up i some times get my 2nd (ide) drive show and some times i dont other times it just disapears off my computer with no warning when it was oin there 5 mins ago
also some times the computer it wont boot and i have to go into bios to set my 2nd (ide) drive as second drive because it changes to 1st boot
and thoughts

Do you use a removable drive, like an external USB drive or camera ? Sometimes they conflict with existing HD's and cause problems.
