Confused Vista error: Back up failed Low disk space

I have a 4 mos. old Dell Dim desktop E520, IP dual core processor, 2GB Ram, 250 GB Sata II HD & Vista Premium.
And at start up I now see the error msg.
"Low Disk Space" you are running out of disk space on Recovery (D:)
Called Dell and learned that D is a partition of my HD and that I may need to make it larger....yikes way over my head! Or/and reset my back up parameters, which were set by Dell at factory. And I was told to search the internet for other users with the same problem!

The Back Up Failed error msg. directed me to delete old unneccesary files. So I emptied the recylcle bin and on the back up list I unticked what I thought would be large files: Music, Videos and TV shows (which I don't have anyway)...but no difference.
I have not set Restore Point as I figured that is only used when you actually want to restore... so maybe that's wrong?
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thx.

Re: Vista error: Back up failed Low disk space

your D drive[partition] on a brand name computer is the restore partition and is usually only around 10gig in size
you have to direct your backup to another drive or partition
i never back anything up apart from programs i buy and d/load and which i put on dvd disks,so i will have to leave it to someone else on how to direct the backup to somewhere other than D

Re: Vista error: Back up failed Low disk space

If this helps I see under Recovery D: total size 9.99GB.
19.9MB free of 9.99GB
And I think I saw somewhere that Dell has set Back Up automatically....weekly. Maybe that's the problem?

Thanks for the thought.

Vista error "Back Up Failed" Low Disk Space

If my Vista Home Premium has been set to automatically back up every day for the past 4 mos. (since I bought it) I imagine that would cause the disk space to become full.

I now figured out how to set the back up to less frequent but not what to remove, or how to remove it.

If anyone could advise me what steps to take to correct the situation it would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks for your help.

Re: Vista error: Back up failed Low disk space

do you do anything important that you need to back up at all or do you just backup for the sake of it's there

Re: Vista error: Back up failed Low disk space

Hi,
So far the only things I can remember downloading are pictures, PC Tools Spyware Doctor, Acrobat Reader, Power Point viewer, plus all the automatic updates to Windows and programs installed on my computer.
Is there any way to look at exactly what is being deleted before hand, so I don't mess things up?

Thanks for your help.

Re: Vista error: Back up failed Low disk space

i never use backup, but i would think that you would not be able to pick and choose what to remove from a previous backup without rendering it useless
they are only my thoughts on it,which you would'nt take as gospel
