Windows One care
This program from microsoft is pretty fair but in its dar tune up it wants to defrag the disks which takes forever and I have a automatic constant defragger running.
I can't find a setting to remove this pain from the tune up. Anybody got any suggestions and please don't be cruel

Re: Windows One care
One care isnt the best program for protection or to keeps your system running smoothly.. Ive had it before. Infact it makes more problems than it fixes... so i would uninstall it
For free protection go for Avast Virus protection works great for vista.. A good but not free defrag tool is O&O Defrag It has a 30day fully functional trial.. |

Re: Windows One care
Thanks and I agree with part of your comment.
I wonder if Microsoft will ever get it through their thick head that people don't want them setting how a program is to be set up. Their attitude is to create all programs for the dumbest user instead of letting people configure. Defragging was okay when drives were 20 GB but today with 350 GB drives being standard, first of all, I question whether it is needed or not. It seems only companies that manufacture defragging software want you to defrag. If MS wanted something to do, why not have the op system only write contiguous files. Oh that makes sense, that is why they don't so it. |

Re: Windows One care
I was trying out One Care when I upgraded to Vista Ultimate. My computer would shut down everytime I put in a DVD. Microsoft techs were totally stumped as to why it did it. It took hours to figure out that One Care was the problem. I got rid of it and I haven't had any problems with my drives since. Go figure.

Re: Windows One care
One Care also has abysmal detection rates according to many sources. I can't remember for certain, so I won't link, but testers have found it laughable.
When Windows Defender came out of beta, I thought "they may have finally got it right" as far as security tools. On the surface, it looks good. Some months later, it's very presence on a PC in my care is as welcome as a virus. |

Re: Windows One care
I agree with AUS KARLOS. Avast seems to be a very good anti-virus and you can't beat the price. I also switched to PC Tools Plus for my firewall and so far it has worked very well with Vista. As far as the defrag thing, I only have 160 gig and it takes forever. I'm concidering installing a 300 or 500 gig. Probably would have to go on vacation for a week and it might be done by the time you get back. I'm sure there is more than one product out there that is better. I'm going to play the wait and see game with any new software with Vista Ultimate installed. Actually the only reason I tried Vista is because a family member works for Microsoft sales and supplies me with product at extremely reduced rates. Otherwise XP was just fine.

Re: Windows One care
O&O Defrag professional is very good at handling large HDD's
Ive got a 250gb, 300gb and a 80gb. Your able to defrag them all at once and it takes me 10mins in total. But the first time when you run it it takes 1hour. It organizes your HDD so important files are at the front. Then from there on you dont have to defrag because it does it all the time (runs in the background) and it doesnt suck resources from your pc when your trying to play games which is a big bonus. |

Re: Windows One care
I got OneCare because of the lack of free anti-virus programs that are compatible with Vista. My free subscription is about to expire. Other than Avast, is there another free anti-virus program available? Also, what would be a good free firewall I can use with Vista?

Re: Windows One care
Just wanted to say I've been using AVG free and it's been working really well. I also read online that it's probably the best antivirus program out there, constantly outperforming others, even the ones you have to pay for. As far as firewalls, I've heard Comodo is the best, but until it comes out for Vista I've been using PC Tools Firewall Plus and have been really pleased with it. Reminds me of Sygate, which was one of my favorite firewalls of all time.
