Connecting to "shared" drives, folders, on local network
With XP I had a local network of three computers--my desktop, my wife's desktop, and my laptop. I bought a new laptop (with Vista). I installed Vista on my desktop. And I have left my wife's with XP.
I have setup the network. The two Vista machines are "connected" in the sense that they show up on the network map, with the XP machine showing up down on the bottom. The network shows up correctly in explorer. I can connect the two Vista computers to the XP drives and folders. But I can't do it with the Vista machines, even though explorer lists them as type "share". (I have set the c drives and documents folders (etc.) to share.) I had trouble for several days connecting to the printer, until I discovered that Live OneCare's firewall was blocking it. Once I turned that off I could use the printer from the laptop. So now, for its trial period at least, I am using Norton. There must be some setting that I have missed, but I can't figure out what. I keep getting the message "\\computername\c is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permission. Access denied." I am logged on as the administrator. I've scoured Help on the subject of access permission and can't find what I need. I certainly miss the XP Network Wizard! Warner |
