Vista startup/ running problems, Conflicting Antivirus maybe?

Ok, so I have a little problem. *deep breath* So the AV that came standard on my desktop(Bullguard I think it was) expired, so I decided to download the trial of NOD32. So, they made it pretty clear to erase all previous AV programs before installation, so I go ahead and delete the Bullguard file from the "all programs" list in the start menu(go easy on me, haha) stupidly thinking that boom, that was the Bullguard program and all its bits and bobs gone so I can safely install the trial. So I download the NOD32 trial and install it and shut down the computer for the night. Come the next morning I fire up the old girl and enter my password and am waiting at the "welcome" screen you get after you enter your password(with the turning orb beside where it says "welcome") and I wait..and wait..and wait. Nothing, so I turn off the computer at the power button(which I was always told is a bad thing to do I know, but I couldn't see any other way to switch it off) So I try a few more times, with the same sequence happening, me waiting and waiting at the welcome screen before turning off at the power button. After these attempts I try again, whereas this time I get past the welcome screen and am presented with my desktop, as usual. Yay, I think to myself, maybe it just mysteriously sorted itself out. No such luck. The taskbar wasn't loading up right and a Bullguard prompt pops up(the prompt i get every time I log on, telling me that I was no longer covered, with links to the website to purchase another subscription etc.) and Windows Live Messenger, which I have set to start up when I log on. So I cancel the Bullguard prompt as usual(at this point I realise my mistake in not being more meticulous and ensuring that all Bullguard files were deleted, not being meticulous at all in fact) and then I get a NOD32 popup(for what, I'm not sure, setup or something maybe(?)). At this point the taskbar still hasnt loaded up properly and displays the time and an icon or two. So I mouse around the desktop a bit, highlighting the odd program before everything freezes up and I'm back to square one, turning off at the power switch.

Wow, that was a really long winded and slightly incoherent explanation. Sorry about that.

Basically, Vista won't start up/run properly/at all and I think conflicting AV's are the problem, but I'm not sure at all, I don't know much about computers at all as you can probably tell.

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Vista startup/ running problems, Conflicting Antivirus maybe?

Hey, so we know that the problem is nod32/bullguard(did you re-start after having uninstalled bullguard?). So to fixing it:

Have you tried booting in safe mode? (when windows is loading repeatedly tap F8 until it asks which mode to startup in)...

If you can get into safemode then try to either system restore or uninstall the program. If not then post back saying so.

Cheers,
Jamey

p.s. i missed this out so:

Also if you can log in in safe mode then try removing bullguard/nod32's startup entries:
Code:
- Click the orb/start
- type "msconfig.exe" and press enter
- go to the startup tab
- look for either startup entry
- uncheck the box next to it

Thank you for your reply Jamie. I think the problem lies with me not uninstalling Bullguard properly and having bits and bobs of the program left over that are now conflicting with nod32.

I have booted up in safe mode and am going to try and uninstall both programs.

Thanks again,
Fed.

EDIT: Ok, I booted up in safe mode and turned off the startups on said programs and restarted, still no joy, I am left waiting and waiting at the Welcome screen you get after you input your password.

Also, when I tried to delete the programs to the recycle bin I was denied saying that I need permission. Am I going about this the wrong way?

EDIT: I tried again and managed to uninstall the Bullguard program in its entirety this time. I rebooted and everything seems to be running hunky-dory. Many thanks Jamey, I owe you!
