Re: which services and processes can I safely stop??
A complete list of Vista SP1 services as outlined by Charles "Black Viper" Sparks, can be found HERE.
Good Luck... and be careful! Regards. . . jcgriff2 .

I was looking for a good place to put this info, and by gosh, here it is.
I've been visiting "Black Viper's" web site for several years to find ways to improve the performance of my computers. Vista has seriously complicated the art of "Tweaking" the OS for better performance. Just yesterday, I found the entire list of Vista services on "B.V.'s " site and set about writing a batch file to either disable or put into Manual mode, all the services that are not really needed. The format for the batch file is like this; sc config Appinfo start= demand sc stop sc config ALG start= demand sc stop ALG sc config AppMgmt start= demand sc stop AppMgmt sc config wbengine start= demand sc stop wbengine This is just a Sample of the lines in my batch file. "Demand" means to put the service in "Manual" mode. To totally disable a service, I use the word disable instead of demand. B.V. gives three different levels of Services to Disable, from SAFE to Stripped to the Bone. Since I'll be sharing this batch file with my friends and customers, I decided to go with the SAFE settings. ![]() I've been using a batch file like this for years on Windows XP and it's definitely helped me get more performance out of my Windows XP PC's, for myself and my customers. I checked my startup times, with a Stop-Watch, before and after running the batch file on my Vista PC and found the startup time was reduced by about 60%. I call that significant. ![]() I'm considering putting my batch file on an FTP server for people to download. Before you ever do anything with your services, it's a good idea to make a new restore point and even a whole system backup, if you can. Be careful, be safe and have fun! Happy Computing ![]() The Shadow ![]()
