Random Crashes

My computer is experiencing irregular crashes. It shows no consistency with a particular program or with processor intensity. When the crash occurs the monitor losses the signal and the fans go to full speed. The computer doesn't restart when it crashes, but stays on with fans at full speed until I manually restart.

I have a gateway fx530.

My best guess is a problem with the power supply, but I want to make sure before I spend money on a new one.

my girlfriend has the same problem. she has an acer AS5315-201G08MI laptop and it crashes every half hour or so...it has vista home basic on there which it came with. i had tried doing many different checks for virus's, ad-aware etc but the problem still persists.
Any ideas?

Re: Random Crashes

A free scan is offered here but if you suspect that malware is the cause of your problems, I suggest following the First Steps at the top right on this page.
