Ok, Vista Ult. on an nVidia MOBO, quad CPU 2.4 GHz(intel) 4Gig Ram 1Gig nVidia Video.
Ok, so the system can "rock with Vista", but suddenly, the "local" admin account lost permissions for 50% of ALL programs and folders. Then the same day, the "hidden" admin account, cannot run, access, remove, or make file or program changes. what gives???? I ran the admin cmd "takeown" for the hidden admin account, but that didn't make any change in the permissions. Programs still request "You do not have permission to ________" you fill in the blank, it occurs with anything . . . Any ideas as to how one re-sets global permissions for an "admin" account? Oh, and yes, I have A/V and antimalware running, upto date, and have scanned the whole system. AVG, SuperAntiSpyware, AdAware, Spysweeper, Rootkit revealer, etc . . . All clean?? Any help would be GREAT !!!!!!! |

Re: Hidden Admin no longer has permission rights?
Hi, how did you activate the "hidden admin" account in Vista? I use it occasionally and requires that I open a CMD prompt by right clicking and selecting "run as administrator" (you can set this to always be the case) now at the prompt type :- net user administrator /active:yes or to turn off substitute "yes " with "no". Reboot to have the Admin option on boot.

Re: Hidden Admin no longer has permission rights?
Yepper, that's the right process.
When rebooting, I have the option now to "login" as either system Admin, or my original "admin" account. The problem started with the "user" admin account, but when logged in as the system admin, I also get the same permission denied problems. |

Re: Hidden Admin no longer has permission rights?
Hi. . .
Did you take ownership of and then change file permissions to folders/files while running as the "hidden admin"? What about the regular admin account? (BEFORE this problem occurred) Regards. . . jcgriff2 .

Re: Hidden Admin no longer has permission rights?
Ok, here goes . . .
At first I started "losing" permission with the regular account. Tried taking "ownership" of them (again) but that didn't work. I still got the "insufficient privelage" message. Thats when I started up the "hidden" admin account. And that "master" account could not run the same programs, folders etc . . . Soooo, I took ownership of the whole secondary drive (drive D:\) BUT it still would not allow access . . . Now I have a mixed bag of who owns what? Vista shure doesn't seem to know, and I cannot make even the primary Admin account take ownership. |

Re: Hidden Admin no longer has permission rights?
This now seems to be not just a random ocurrance.
I have seen many other people with the same problem Vista suddenly, and without reason f#*@s up permissions, and denies access to random folders, files, and programs. Perhaps a *NEW* Vista virus that has not been ID'd yet ????? |

Re: Hidden Admin no longer has permission rights?
When you say that you "started losing permission"... - what files/folders are you speaking of?
How did you change permission settings - via the Properties/security tab or via the command prompt - takeown/icacls? jcgriff2 .

jcgriff2, does it really matter?
plain old files and folders, some are images, word docs, etc. . . folders that I created, and placed files into. Duh, this is not too difficult to describe here. And I already explained how I set the permissions. I don't need people wasting my time asking useless questions that have been already answered. If you have no usefull input then don't post. Furthermore, this thread can be closed. I formatted my HDD, and installed XP Pro. I've had enough of Vista's quirky crap. 'nuff said. Last edited by darstam295 : 07-19-2008 at 10:22 PM. |

Re: Hidden Admin no longer has permission rights?
Quote:
Clarification purposes notwithstanding, my inquiries into the files and their folder locations were done so as I prefer to use CMD (~DOS) line executables such as TAKEOWN/ICACLS to deal with file permission settings. Furthermore, it can matter a great deal where you place files within Vista because of virtualization and ownership rules regarding Windows Updates and program installations. I am glad that you found a work-around/solution to your system trouble. I am sorry that you feel in any manner that I have wasted your time, as I am simply a volunteer like the rest giving my time to help others when and where possible. The thread is therefore so marked SOLVED. jcgriff2 .
