Programs & applications lost on vista

I recently istalled upgrades to my pc. The next day my pc could not perform a start up, and it requested to retrieve previous settings. Once it restarted I saw that most of my applications and programs as well as office 2007 was not there! I performed a system restore but not succesful as system restore was never activated. Therefore the pc restored it to a date prior to me loading programs like office 2007.
Any ideas on how I can retrieve my programs and applications?

The only thing I know that would work is to re-install them.
