User profiles corrupt

I am only able to use my account which is the original one. I have 3
other accounts set up that quit working all of a sudden. When trying to
switch to them there is just a curser and blue screen and nothing else. I
tried deleting all the accounts manually as well (c:\users) and then tried
adding accounts again. The same thing just a blue screen. Did a system
restore as far back as I could no luck! Please help!

Thanks,

Brian

Re: User profiles corrupt

Hi Brian. . .

I would suggest that you add another admin user account immediately - but do not use a user name that you have used before. Those 3 other accounts are probably corrupted by now - including the names because of registry entries and hidden folders.

Please go to the c:\windows\minidump folder gather all of the files that you can find in there and run msinfo32, I will take a look at the dump files that should have been left behind by the Blue Screen of Death (BSOD).

To run msinfo32 - click start, type msinfo32.exe into the start search box, a viewer will appear, save the file in NFO format (very important - you will see it) - then zip everything up and attach to your next post.

Regards. . .

Re: User profiles corrupt

Thanks for the reply. I had created new profiles with different names for my 2 kids but still could not log on, however in the safe mode I can. I have also just created and Admin account for my wife.

Thanks,

Brian

Re: User profiles corrupt

Hi Lancer34. ..

Thanks for the msinfo32 file -did you look in the c:\windows\minidump folder for memory dump files? There should be at least 6.

Please perform the following Vista System File Checker/Repair utility -
Bring up an ELEVATED command prompt
START | type cmd.exe | right-click on cmd.exe up top | select Run as Administrator | respond to User Access Control prompt..
Type the following:

sfc /scannow

Let it run.

Please zip up the dump files and attach to your next post.

Regards. . .

Re: User profiles corrupt

Hi, if you have not corrupted your user profiles too much you may be able to recover them, sfc /scannow will not impact here you see individual users do not have registry hives. They do have individual registry entries preserved in their User Profile in a file called NTUSER.DAT. sfc is not designed to poke in there. Have a look at this MS site http://support.microsoft.com/kb/811151

Says XP applies to Vista as well

Re: User profiles corrupt

Thanks for the help! C:\windows\minidump is empty. I ran sfc/scannow yesterday from safe mode dos prompt.
