Hi There
![]() I'm new here so be gentle with me please. I've got a Dell Inspiron 530 with Vista. I'm trying to network it with my Netgear router. The problem is the Dongle!! Its "WORKING" so is my "ROUTER" they're already connected to another Dell machine GX 50 (My Wifes). So I know there's no problems there. When I took the Dongle to my brothers machine (Not Dell) also running Vista (Retail) he plugged it in and hey presto it worked straight away he could have connected up with next doors internet!! So home I went armed with this information & phoned Dell. They were in "New Delhi" then they said "pass the machine over to us" so I did "What a marvellous experience" to watch my computer being "USED" by someone thousands of miles away. After a hour she passed the computer over to another technician who then spent another hour going over the procedure I'd already done umpteen times myself. Only to return the verdict "We cannot find anything wrong!!" So I got another technician in who had just done exactly the same setup on his father-in-laws machine the week previous with the same Dongle & Netgear Router. Hoping for a good result "BUT" sadly NO. No Joy!! Me & my brother have had computers for 15yrs & never come across this before. We've spent hours & hours on this. The VERDICT: We reckon there is something stopping the dongle (which is working but not even showing up) from connecting to the router---- VISTA---- We've tried: Special Permissions on everything & even put the "Run as Administrator" on the .EXE File to no avail. Other than putting another OS on we cannot think of anything else. We're thinking of taking off the OEM Version & putting Retail on as DELLS VISTA is completely different to my brothers machine. Both machines are less than 6 months old!! After that I hope someone can come back with something substantial and that we haven't tried yet. Regards Cheekyman ![]()

Re: Remote Assistance with Vista from "New Delhi"
Why are you using a dongle? . . the Inspiron has network adaptor card built in? There is no difference between the installed versions of OEM or Retail . . it's all in the settings

Hi NemisisDB,
I've been speaking for my brother as he cannot read & write properly. I'd just like to thankyou for the QUICK replies. I will check on this today ASAP (When he gets out of bed) If this is true he's a moron. and I'll play bl**dy hell with him.(In fact I'll check it out now on Dells site) Still beg to differ on Dells Vista my brother hasn't got half of what I've got on mine!! Regards Cheekyman (Frank)

Hi Simpswr
![]() Just checked out Dells Website & Inspiron 530 I quote: Integrated 10/100 Ethernet LAN on system board CABLE ![]() Optional: Internal Wireless-N Bluetooth® 2.0 wireless technology with Media Card Reader He has ADSL not cable. And regards the Optional he would not have taken it. He wouldn't have thought about that at all. So we're back to square one I'm afraid on that. Regards Cheekyman (Frank) ![]()

What kind of dongle is it? Is the dongle recognized when it is plugged in to the pc? Do yoiu then use Windows to manage the wireless connection?

Hi Simpswr,
![]() Sorry for getting mixed up the last time with your name ![]() But I'm on 3 Forums at the moment trying to sort this out. One has given up on me Ha Ha. Right its a T-Link Dongle its in & working!! ![]() The softwares in to. It also shows up in Device Manager. BUT It doesn't show up in the Networking Window thats where the problem lies. Somehow we've to get it from the computer to the network. ![]() To show up at least. I put it in my computer and it came up first time. Straight on the network. So it does not matter if there's a router present or not. He put it in his wifes computer running XP Pro and hey presto connected first time & he had a choice of even connecting to next doors network!!! So its this machine it must be. Hi SimpSwr
![]() Do you have Wireless Zero Configuration service set to Auto and started? If you mean this is in the services you're wrong. There's nothing in the services to do with "Wireless" This was confirmed by the "Technicians" in Delhi also. Me & my brother checked our services against each others machines. He found only one sevice turned off & several missing!! I told him not to mess with it "BUT" he turned this service on against my better judgement. Only to find when he re-booted the bl**dy machine didn't come on!! He's restored it 6 times now because of Vista & Dell's "Adjustments" To tell you the truth Simpswr he's ordered a network card now. Rather than just plug into the system I said "If its intergrated into the motherboard the computer has to accept it and is more likely to let it work!!" If this does not work. Can we use "MY" windows disk to put on his computer then obviously he puts his own code in for it to register?? Or just run it over the top somehow putting in wot Dell took out. Regards Cheekyman (Frank)

However, if he has a Dell install disc, it will produce the same installation, just without all the HS that DEll installs afterwards.

Hi Simpswr,
![]() We're waiting now for the "wireless" card to arrive. We noticed to about the "WLAN" NOT being there!! ![]() But it is on my machine? Strange that. My version of windows is "retail" not "oem" and would you believe it the code is different to. He has a combination of letters and numbers 4 then 5 then 4 where mine is 5-5-5 all the way. Like QWC7J-HY23G-KLH65 etc....... I'd just like to thank you for all your info & I'll send you a PM (Reward) The other "FORUMS" have given up on us Ha Ha. (Even DELL's Forum) ![]() I'll post here again Simpswr when we get the Card to let you know how we went on OK. I Like to inform people of the outcome. When I post in "MY" forum people don't let me know how they got on and its frustrating. OK see yah. Cheekyman (Frank) ![]() Free Wallpaper Simpswr for you ![]()

Re: Remote Assistance with Vista from "New Delhi"
Hi Simpswr,
![]() We got the wireless card today!! My brother put it in and walla #/*@#* NOTHING!! Wouldn't connect up again ![]() BUT HA HA!! It told us that the "Wirelss Service" was missing ![]() After all that bl**dy messing about. Even DELL techs didn't know ![]() So the status is now I'm giving my brother a 80GB HDD to install then he's using "MY" Vista disk to install on it. He's completely wiping his C: drive then we're going to see how it performs if OK we'll change the Drive letters round. Thanks again for your support (I'll probably be back sometime) Regards Frank MY WEBSITE FEEL FREE TO VISIT. LET US KNOW IF YOU SEE THIS THANKS
