I hope someone can help

Hello community!

I have a problem.

A friend of mine recommended Kaspersky Internet Security. He told me it was way better than my current security software, Macafee. So I went to the Kaspersky website, downloaded the trial, and evaluated it for the 30 days.

The software itself was ok. It wasnt super fantastic and unbelievable, but it was good. I'd say about the same as my current software, at least for my usage.

So with only a few days left on the trial, I decided that it wasn't worth spending the money, especially since I still have 6 months remaining on my Macafee software. So I uninstalled it using the softwares uninstall program. After a series of prompts and removal of files, the software asked me to restart and I did. Thats when the problems all started.

After restarting, I wanted to immediatly re-install my old security software. I didn't have a hard copy, and when I uninstalled it before the Kaspersky, I removed all traces of it. So I went to Macafee's website, logged in, and went to the area where I could download my purchased software. On my way to the download link, I encountered a blank white screen. I thought that was odd and backed up and retried the site and got the same screen. For some reason I couldn't get to the download link.

I exited and tried some other internet programs. I realized that most links and clickable items on my screen were not usable. Most links and clickables were completely useless. Also, my Vista sidebar was not functioning properly. My gadgets were there but were not working and looked "compressed" in visual appearence.

I was now getting concerned. My internet was nearly useless and I still had no internet security. Even my windows firewall and defender were not working and when I would try to activate them I was getting error messages. I figured I'd better re-install Kaspersky, at least until my trial ended, so I could have some security while I tried to figure out the source of my problems.

Luckily, I hadn't removed the downloaded Kaspersky file from my desktop, so I was able to re-install it. After installation, my problems nearly dissapeared. I still had some slight graphical issues. (A big delay in pictures appearing on all websites. Basically, the website is completely loaded then about 3-5 seconds later all the pictures appear.) But other than that, every operated normally.

So I quicky went to Macafee to download my previous security software and this time I was able to have the download link appear and I was able to click and download it.

Yay! Right? Nope.

After downloading the Macafee, I uninstalled Kaspersky, restarted and opened the Macafee installation. The installation started pretty well then the installation hung. I waited 20-30 minutes and with no progress, I canceled the installation, then retried, same thing. Same hang at the same place. I started to think that having the Kaspersky uninstalled was doing something to my PC. So I re-installed the Kaspersky and tried the Macafee. This time it worked. I got the Macafee installed and running. So I figured I could finally uninstall the Kaspersky for good. Wrong again.

After uninstalling Kaspersky then restarting, I had the exact same problems as before.

So now, I'm currently running the Macafee with the Kaspersky installed, but disabled. I'm still have the graphical problems, and my internet just seems laggy in general. Websites are super slow, everything loads then all the pictures are little boxes with the generic picture icon in the upper right corner. The picture boxes hang there for several seconds before finally loading through. Most websites that I visit have the little "loaded with errors" icon on the bottom left of my IE. Nearly every time I go to a new site, I get the "waiting on.... to respond"

I was able to correspond with a Kaspersky "tech" guy. He was not much help. We communicate via email. He sent me a file that helps completely remove all traces of Kaspersky, but that didn't help either.

I have scanned and defragged, and scanned for more. I have rebooted my modem, double checked as many settings as I could understand and still nothing.

For security software, I have Macafee, Adaware, Spybot, SUPERAntispyware and Counterspy.

I think I've covered everything. Hopefully someone will have some sort of ideas. This is just getting really frustrated. My PC is only a few months old, and worked like a dream until Kaspersky :(

For anyone that read this entire post, I thank you.

Re: I hope someone can help

I'd try running system restore to take you back to prior to installing Kaspersky to see if that helps.

Re: I hope someone can help

Hi Masallee. . .

Absolutely follow djaburg's advice - system restore.

After that, I would recommend running both the Kaspersky Removal Tool and the McAfee Removal Tool - then re-install McAfee. Download each tool to your desktop then boot into SAFEMODE and run them with a re-boot in between. Then re-boot again into normal windows and re-install McAfee.

Re: I hope someone can help

Thanks for the replies, I really appreciate it.

When open system restore, I got an error message that says:

"There was an unexpected error in the property page"

When I look in the event log I have a few events:

Re: I hope someone can help

Hi. . .

The Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS) makes backup copies of deleted and changed files and supplements System Restore. Please do the following:

Bring up an ELEVATED command prompt (DOS box) -
START | type cmd.exe | right-click on cmd.exe up top | select Run as Administrator | answer the UAC prompt - Continue/enter Admin password

Now... copy and paste the following into the "DOS" command prompt box - EXACTLY as it appears (to paste - right-click on the top of the "DOS" command prompt box then select "Edit" then select paste) and hit enter after each line:

Code:

vssadmin list ShadowStorage > c:\$vssinfo.txt

vssadmin list Shadows >>c:\$vssinfo.txt

vssadmin list Volumes >>c:\$vssinfo.txt

vssadmin list Writers >>c:\$vssinfo.txt
Please note the first line has only one greater than sign (>); the others have two (>>).

Now, you need to check on the status of three services. Click on Start and type services.msc into the start search box.

When the viewer comes up, scroll down to Volume Shadow Service and make sure it is set to manual and is not disabled. Also, there are other services that must be turned on as well, as VSS is dependant on them running as well. Scroll down again, but now look for Remote Procedure Call (RPC) and make sure it is set to automatic. RPC has a dependency as well - DCOM Server Process Launcher - make sure it is set to automatic. Were any disabled?

Now, from the same DOS box from the prior commands, issue the following (they differ somewhat from the first set - the first has two greater than signs):

Code:

vssadmin list ShadowStorage >> c:\$vssinfo.txt

vssadmin list Shadows >>c:\$vssinfo.txt

vssadmin list Volumes >>c:\$vssinfo.txt

vssadmin list Writers >>c:\$vssinfo.txt & start notepad c:\$vssinfo.txt

A notepad will open; copy the contents into your next thread.

Regards. . .

jcgriff2, thanks for your reply.

So I followed your instruction exactly and everything happened just like you explained and the only thing that wasn't turned on in services was the Volume Shadow Service.

So I tried to open System Restore and it opened and everything looked good. However, onece I got into System Restore, I saw that there was no restore points, so I have nothing to restore to. Not sure if that is a Vista thing, because I know I used system restore on my XP PC and there were tons of automatic restore points.

Well I figured I might as well start a restore point, so I clicked on create restore point, entered todays sate as a name, then I got another error box telling me that "Shadow copying the specified volume is not supported (0x8004230C)"

I'm a bit dissapointed to see that my PC has no automatic restore points. Like I said earlier, on XP there were restore points made daily I think.

Re: I hope someone can help

Hi. . .

I have seen some instances where System Restore is not turned on in new Vista systems, but they seem to be a rarity.

Vista will make daily backups via System Restore and also create restore points prior to the installation of a program or a Windows Update.

Was the drive involved with the error message the system drive - usually c:? How many selections for drives were there on your "create a restore point" screen? Which did you select?

The second set of vs commands appear fine and indicate that it should be up and running.

Here is a screen shot of my system - I don't include drive e: as that is a partition where I download and process memory dumps from the forum.

I made a screen shot of the error that I'm encountering. And The drive that I'm getting the errors with is the C drive. And that is the only one I tried saving.

Thanks again jcgriff2.

Re: I hope someone can help

Hi. . .

In the screenshot you posted, I see the boxes for drives c: and d: checked. Please remove the checkmark from d: and try it again. Drive d: is a recovery drive to be used in times of system disasters. It is probably "hidden" or considered a "system" drive or may contain files falling under the attributes of one.

Try it with just the c: drive and let me know how you make out.

Re: I hope someone can help

I unchecked the D: drive and tried to create a restore point on only the C: drive.

Unfortunately, I got the same error message. Heres the most recent screen:

Since this seems to be turned off or never turned on, does this mean that my PC never made a backup?

Hope this most recent screen helps,
Thanks again.

When I had system restore troubles I logged in in safe mode & it all seemed to work. Maybe worth trying out of interest.

Good luck and I hope you get your computer sorted.

Re: I hope someone can help

Thanks for the idea Trent.

Unfortunately that didn't work either. I tried ti make a screen shot, but in safe mode, I couldn't save it.

Basically, it was the same error message that I've been getting all along, The Shadow Copy service isn't working etc..

I'm willing to try anything. Anyone have any ideas?

Re: I hope someone can help

The only other thing I can think of is how about starting again. When I get a problem that is a tricky one normally I just do a clean install of the OS. Depends on how much info you have on your computer really. If like me you dont have too much to back up then in my opinion a fresh install should solve your issue. Recently I had a problem with my system restore, for some reason it wouldn't let me manually create restore points but it did however automatically create them. I did a new install & it sorted it right out.

Have you ever done a fresh install before?

I'd be more than happy to talk you through it if you decide thats what you would like to do. Do you have the Vista install disc?
