Vista Update Problems?

A few days ago, my laptop vista computer began to download updates and then installed them. A day later, I turned my computer on and it said it was unable to start and did some kind of a restor. Once the computer came back on, it wanted to install updates for the computer. I let it do this and once it finished I got the 'unable to start your computer'. This has been repeating itself for 3 days, and lately its getting worse.
I can not turn off the updates, it keeps giving warning messages and then turning the computer on, but nothing has changed.
Does anyone know why my computer is doing this?

I don't know why your computer is doing this, but I have an idea that might help.

If you are given the option, start your computer in safe mode without networking. This will prevent your computer from doing any updates, so you should be able to disable automatic updates.

If you aren't given the safe mode option, turn your computer off by holding the on button until the computer powers down. This is an improper shut down and should result iin the safe mode options being presented the next time you turn your computer on.

Next, you should be able to restrict the updates that have been causing you problems from downloading. I can't remember the steps off hand, but they'll be under the "View Available Updates" link hiding below the "Install Updates" button.

Yeah, I tried that. I restarted, used safe mode, but once the desktop was up, the update window came up and wouldn't go away unless I restarted the computer for it to install. It closes down the computer, restarts, updates, and then goes to 'Startup Repair because it says the computer was unable to start properly.

I'm figuring, that something is corrupted or something in the Vista hardware. The updates try to install, but has a problem to restart properly, goes to starup repair and the installed updates are removed. And it repeats this step every time the computer is turned on or turned off.
