Vista Hangs on CheckDisk then on Windows Update

I'm using a Windows Vista Basic computer and it's recently gone really weird. It started off with not being able to log on to Windows... it would just stay on the logon screen with my name, and then it would restart later... and now it's running Check Disk... saying "wait while your computer restarts" - it never does... When I've managed to log on (rarely) it downloaded some updates from Microsoft Update and what it's doing now is trying to install them.. then at the end it says "Installed 3 of 3 : 0% Complete) and still does nothing... is this possibly a virus?

It did say for a short while at one point... whenever I tried to open a program saying something like "cannot be opened due to priveleges/not an administrator" of which I am the only user and administrator on the laptop!!

I don't have access to a recovery CD as the reseller did not supply one, and they will charge for one... and have said I can make one, but can't logon so I can't do that!

The laptop's always been fairly slow, but I'm really not sure what this could be or how to fix it?
