My games are not working with windows vista

I have been using vista for about 8 months now and so far have been very happy with it, it ran all of my games perfectly fine. My PC was starting to get a little slow so i decided to format, worst decision of my life. I have 2gb ram, 8800gts, and core 2 6750. I have installed drivers for my video card, yet hardly any of my games work. So far i have tested Knights of the Old Republic 2, Mass Effect, Crysis, Conquer online, and pretty much all the source games (Half-life 2, portal, team fortress 2, etc). So far all the steam games work just like they did before i formatted, as does Conquer Online, but KOTOR II, Mass Effect, and Crysis will not start. I have tried running them in capatability mode for windows xp and i have run them as Administrator, but nothing has worked. The game will begin to boot up (Splash image will appear) then after 1-10 seconds i get an error message saying "(the game) has stopped working and will now close." and under that it says "Windows Vista will now search for a fix and will notify you if it finds one". It never says anything afterwards. Please help me! this is driving me nuts, i have formatted twice now and it did not fix the problem, if you need any more information just post it.

Thank you

Im pretty good with computers so it shouldn't be hard to help me out.

Re: My games are not working with windows vista

Hi frosty115. . .

Check the following areas within Vista -

I suggest that you check these areas for further information if you have not already done so yet:

• Problem Reports and Solutions:
START | type wercon.exe into the Start Search box | right-click on wercon.exe that appears up top | select Run as Administrator | view "See Problems to Check".
This is where answers from Microsoft, if any will be. You can also view the basic app crash data here as well.

• The Event Viewer -
START | type eventvwr.exe into the Start Search box | right-click on eventvwr.exe that appears up top | select Run as Administrator | view the various logs starting with the Administrative logs. I suggest that you play one of the games and note the exact time it crashes/closes. Then go into the event logs and look for that time and view the events leading up to it.

• Reliability and Performance Monitor:
START | type perfmon into the Start Search box | right-click on perfmon that appears up top | select Run as Administrator | view both the Performance Monitor and the Reliability Monitor.
The Reliability Monitor contains a daily log of app crashes.

Any ? - let me know.

Regards. . .

jcgriff2

Re: My games are not working with windows vista

Hey jcgriff2, I have checked for problems and solutions using wercon.exe, microsoft did report Steam.exe as a possible problem, it said "A newer version of Steam is available and may help to fix the problem". But when i log onto steam it does not auto-update, i am almost 100% sure i have the latest version. It reported hl2.exe as a potential problem as well, but it simply said it could not gather information from the manufacturer.

I located the KOTORII crashes, and this was the error log it gave me:

Problem signature
Problem Event Name: APPCRASH
Application Name: swkotor2.exe
Application Version: 2.0.0.0
Application Timestamp: 00000000
Fault Module Name: StackHash_5b1e
Fault Module Version: 0.0.0.0
Fault Module Timestamp: 00000000
Exception Code: c0000005
Exception Offset: 00000000
OS Version: 6.0.6000.2.0.0.256.1
Locale ID: 1033
Additional Information 1: 5b1e
Additional Information 2: 697fe2e9a226adbf80c68a8440169545
Additional Information 3: bdec
Additional Information 4: e76b05dc13ef4d0da55621754dd4c84e

As for the performance monitor, my CPU was running at about 1-2% capacity, which is quite healthy, and i noticed that the reliability monitor hadn't reported all the times that games have crashed because of the "(Game) has stopped working at will now close". It had only logged ingame crashes, which i had quite a bit of (Usually playing SMOD). I have been playing SMOD (A mod for half-life 2) recently, and it has been crashing a lot more than it had before i formatted. Also, whenever i manually close conquer online, the game will close, but windows, for some reason, reports an error saying "Conquer has stopped working". It's actually a different error than what i have been getting with KOTOR, Crysis, and Mass Effect, but i think it may be reporting this error for the same reason as the other games.

As for event viewer, i'm not quite sure how to operate it. Is there a timeline of errors that i need to find?

Thank you

Re: My games are not working with windows vista

The PC is custom-built, the motherboard is the Asus P5N32-E and im using the audio card that comes with the motherboard. I'll try what you said about crysis but i don't think that is the problem because crysis is only one of the games that im having this problem with.

Re: My games are not working with windows vista

Hi. . .

I noticed that you are not running Vista SP1. Are all of your Windows Updates in... and did they install successfully? Do you know if your system was updated with SP1 prior to the re-format/re-install of Vista OS? There may be a perfectly sound reason as to the lack of SP1 - so please do not "force" install it.

Regards. . .
