Each time I try to activate the sleep mode, it lasts for only a few seconds before the PC pops back to life again. Coincidentally or not, this only started happening after I installed SP1.

For what it is worth, I have the same problem on my Vista and new Dell PC with SP1 installed. However, in my case, I think my problem has always been there, even prior to installing SP1.

I contacted Dell for help and the tech took me through every conceivable fix and nothing worked. The tech finally left me with the fact she will do more research and is suppose to contact me with what she finds. However, I am not counting on her to recontact me.

Check your keyboard and mouse settings on Device Manager. There's a setting there somewhere that allows the mouse/keyboard to wake the computer, you should uncheck it.

In your BIOS, check to make certain that you have disabled any devices that will wake the computer that you don't want, most particularly LAN.

Routers may wake a sleeping computer with routine signals if this is enabled.

so much can wake up a sleeping computer, its sometimes impossible to track it all down. Things to look at,

your mouse or keyboard - if wireless or optical/laser, sometime the slightest vibration can wake the computer up
your router - as previously mention, sometimes signals are sent that will wake it up
your software - some software does automatic updates that can wake your computer up. In addition some software will call home just to provide information. One last thing about software, some will scan your system for whatever, sometimes that will wake your system.
email - depending upon the email client, sometimes checking for new emails can wake your computer up
finally nasties can wake your computer up. If your computer is infected with something, they can call home or do whatever.

This is what I found for my Vista system. I have two entries in Device Manager for my mouse and they both have checked “Allow this device to wake the computer.” A network adapter listing under Properties>Power Management has a heading “Wake on LAN” with three options checked as follows: Wake on Directed Packet, Wake on Magic Packet and Wake on Magic Packet from Power Off State. A fourth option, Wake on Link, was not checked.

When I talked to Dell, they had me uncheck all of the items listed for the network adapter. When I did that, my PC had problems booting up so I went back and put check marks back in.

Dell then had me uncheck the marks for my mice. That did not solve my problem.

So, I decided to not uncheck all of the items for network adapter and unchecked only “Wake on Directed Packet.” I left the other options checked. I am happy to say my PC now works and it stays in the Sleep mode and boots up properly. Now, my only concern is by removing the check mark, will that prevent my PC from performing some function? When I Googled for information, the responses seem to indicate I would be okay.

Thank you, Jerry. Your fix worked, although under Network Adaptor it was to uncheck 'Allow this device to wake the computer'.

Glad you had success. Since you use Xp and I use Vista, I am not surprised that your wording was different.

Sorry, your profile on the left indicates Xp. Even though, I have found out that with Vista, wording and choices can be different for Vista users using different PC manufactures and/or Vista OS programs.
