HDD Transfer
My pc w/XP crashed. I replaced the power supply but that was not the cause. So, I purchased a new pc w/VISTA as the O/S. I'm trying to get the data off the old HDD. I bought BYTECC's BT-300 Adapter but it is not compatible w/VISTA. VISTA won't recognize the drive.
What are my options? How can I access the data on the old HDD and, even if I need to copy it onto CD's, that is an acceptable (although lengthy) alternative. |

Re: HDD Transfer
Welcome to TSF!
I have the BT-300 and it works fine with Vista. What type of hard drive are you trying to see? With Western Digital IDE, make sure no jumpers are on the drive for master or slave. You could also connect it as a slave in your new computer. Paul

Re: HDD Transfer
The drive is an Hitachi Deskstar (80 GB - IDE). It states that it is a Master Drive and I've looked and don't find any jumpers on it at all.
If the drive is defective, what are my options for getting the data off it? Thnx. |

Re: HDD Transfer
I believe this is your drive. The jumpers should be set as master. G to H and A to B as shown under shipping default condition
. http://www.hitachigst.com/hdd/support/7k80/7k80jum.htm Paul

Re: HDD Transfer
Paul:
You're right. I found the jumpers (Duh!) I was set to A-B; E-F. Moved the jumper so that I had A-B; G-H. I tried to use the BT-300 again and it is not being recognized by the plug 'n play. If my HDD is defective (which it appears that it may be) what are my options for trying to get the data off it? Thnx, Bernie |

Re: HDD Transfer
Are you connecting the power plug directly to the hard drive? This must be done for IDE drives. The power connection to the BT-300 is only for SATA drives.
I'm sorry for seemingly avoiding you laste question but if the drive is really bad the getting data from it is very expensive.

Re: HDD Transfer
Yes, the power is directly to the drive.. The drive is spinning. So, I guess the driva has crashed. Disk Doctor wants $500-1,900 to recover w/o any promises and a 2 -week turnaround.
Do you know of anyone else who performs data recovery from a crashed drive? Geek Squad? Thnx. |
