Re: ethernet cord not being recognized

Does the other computers work fine using the exact same ethernet cable and port it is plugged into at the modem/router? Just want to make sure you do not have a cable problem, or a problem at the port on modem router where that cable plugs in. If other computers can get to the internet by simply plugging them into your same ethernet cable then you can concentrate on the computer itself.

Go to the Network connections in your Control Panel and find Local Area Connection. Right click on it and disable it.....wait a moment....right click on it and enable it. After a few moments does your ethernet comm lights start blinking?

Another thing to try is update the driver for your network card via Device Manager.

Re: ethernet cord not being recognized

yes, I tired swapping ethernet cables and they both work! I am now trying what you asked and lets see what happens..

It says a Network Cable is unplugged. Even though I have it plugged in!

Re: ethernet cord not being recognized

What about the port the ethernet cable plugs into? The best way to test, you may mean you have done this, is taking the eternet cable from back of computer and plug in another and see if it works. This tests the cable and everything else....like the port it is plugged into. If everything works and only the computer in question fails to show connected, then update the driver. If updating the driver still shows cable disconnected then good chance the ethernet interface in the computer is dead.

Re: ethernet cord not being recognized

Yes, it works with a diff. laptop.

HOw do I update that driver?
I hope it is nt dead...
What happened is that my computer screen was not showing up so I manually restarted (it was blinking before) after I did that it stopped blinking...

Re: ethernet cord not being recognized

Sounds like, hopefully, the driver got corrupted during the dirty shutdown. You'll need to download, to disk or stick drive, an up to date driver for your specific ethernet controller and operating system. Google search should help you track it down. Then follow the steps below

Right click on MY COMPUTER
Choose MANAGE from the list
In Management Console expand DEVICE MANAGER
Find your ethernet controller in the list, not the category heading but the actual ethernet controller, and double click on it.
Go to the tab at the top for DRIVER
Use the links to update driver.
