Windows.Old?
Keep in mind, my knowledge on computers is limited.
Well.. I recently got a Dell XPS 1530 laptop for college, and just this morning I was having issues with sound and memory storage. There would be no audio output on the computer, and when I hovered over the sound in the bottom right corner, it would say that no audio was running, and the option to open the volume mixer would be grayed out. Also, the network icon in the bottom right would say that there was not enough memory for it to operate. I don't remember exactly what it said, but I'm pretty sure it was something along the lines of, "there is not enough memory to complete this operation" or something. So, I go to system restore and I get the same error. I then try to use the internet, (it worked before I tried to system restore), but now apparently there was not enough memory to load a page. I tried google searching, but couldn't really find anything (on a different computer). I heard that Vista has problems where it thinks it doesn't have enough memory, but it does or something. Well.. I figure (being the idiot I am) I'll just do a fresh install of Windows Vista. However, after doing so, reinstalling EVERYTHING that comes with the laptop is becoming too much of a hassle, especially since I don't know what and what not to install. So, I currently have about 90 Gigs of the 140 Gig HDD, so restoring Windows.old would be possible, but I really have no idea how to go about it. Sorry for the giant wall of text. Help would be appreciated, thanks. |

Re: Windows.Old?
When you did that fresh install of Vista, did you mean you formatted the hard drive?
If not, please do so. Do a full format, install Vista and nothing else, and check for problems. If even at that point you have memory or sound problems, then it's most likely a hardware failure. There are a lot of applications you can use to check your memory for defects. Download UBUNTU and run the Live CD to run the full memory test. I believe the sound failure is a side-effect of some memory issues. |
