Connecting to web via ethernet cable strange error

Hi
I'm woking at a chinese company and they have their computers connected to the internet via ethernet cables connected to a router. I brought in my laptop today and tried to unplug one of the ethernet cables from their computers and plug it in to mine. However, it doesnet work and I end up with a limited connectivity problem. I tried reseting everything but I cant fix it. Then I plug the cable back in to another computer and it works fine.

Can it be a visa firewall problem?

I would say its more a network firewall than a specific Vista fault, I doubt you could just connect any PC to their network without permissions being set on maybe a central computer or within the router itself. Most big companies have something like this sort of action as your basically connecting an unclean PC to a network with sensitive data and you could be bringing any viruses or trojans into the network.

I can set access right to specific computer from within my router and stop any alien commputers from connecting fullstop.

Have you tried setting your laptops ip address to the same as your desktop PC ?

Hmm.
Its a little emberrassing- but I don't know how to set my laptop IP as my desktop IP.
