Vista ReadyBoost Question
I just bought and plugged in a new 1GB Vista ReadyBoost USB stick, and now Vista is using it.
But Vista says it would perform best to only use 850MB from the 1GB USB stick. I found that interesting. Why not use the whole 1GB. Anyone have any ideas? And will Vista now use this 850MB on my ReadyBoost USB Stick in place of using my HDD for virtual swap file? |

Why would your 4GB ReadyBoost use 3.2/3.5GB if all Vista needed was 850MB for ReadyBoost? So seeing yours is using 3.2/3.5GB, I wonder why mine is only using 850MB. Anyone shed some light on this? |

Re: Vista ReadyBoost Question
My understanding of the reason why Vista doesn't use the whole 4 Gbytes of RAM is that the difference is allocated to handling video (so it actually IS being used). I don't know if this applies to this situation with the 1 Gbyte stick.

What do you mean being used to handle video? What does "handle video" mean? What exactly is written to the ReadyBoost that "handles video"? you mean come codecs? Or media player itself? Or something else? And where do you get your information from? Have you spoken to someone from Microsoft you told you this? |

Re: Vista ReadyBoost Question
No, I'm just repeating what I think I've read from other threads. It's not of primary interest to me; I only have 2 Gbytes of RAM and am not that concerned.
I guess my primary point is that the idea that Vista "can't" use all 4 Gbytes is inaccurate, and my second is that it is probably not related to your situation anyways. And I do get and appreciate your point. Frequently people post things as "fact" and it is a good idea to get some sense of their credibility before accepting their "answers", because frequently they are quite wrong, and those that give them get defensive when their credibility is challenged. I don't. I like credible facts and not random opinions supported by defensive emotions. You can regard my crediblity as quite low, but trying to be helpful. |

Anyway, I have removed my readyBoost 1GB USB stick and disabled Superfetch and Readyboost on my Vista. Couple of reasons why I did that: 1. My HDD would never stop, it kept grinding and grinding driving me nuts. But once I disabled Superfetch and Readyboost, it stopped, thank goodness :-) 2. Playing BF2142 I noticed that the game was actually slower running than when it only uses my HDD. The frame rate in the game was choppy. But once I turned ReadyBoost and Superfetch off, it went good again. I guess ReadyBoost is not meant to be used for games. And there is nowhere in ReadyBoost that I can tell it to exlude BF2142 and games. Oh well. Goodbye ReadyBoost :P |
