I have a very old program that was running smoothly in Vista. I assume it is a 16-bit program. Anyway, it was working fine, then it wasn't. I started getting a problem about the config.nt file and "required system file is missing". Somehow, I managed to do something very simple (no emulation) from a solution I found on Google and that fixed the problem.
Now it started happening again but this time, I can't find the solution anywhere. I really need to use this program for my work and there's no available update. Any ideas? PS. I have Vista SP1 |

The article on the Microsoft knowledgebase at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/324767/en-us might be relevant.

Re: Config.nt system problem (16-bit program) - It was working not it's not
Hi. . .
Check on the link provided by foxed. However, please note that it is for XP - but should be OK within Vista. I mention this only because I can tell you that you will encounter file permission issues if you attempt to edit any of the files mentioned as they are located in the \windows\system32 folder (directory). There are two other things that I can think of off hand to try - whether they can "cure" the config.nt issue, I am unsure of - but I do run a 16-bit DOS app as well - 1. Right-click on the icon or exe file and select "Run as Administrator" 2. Right-click on same as #1, selecting Properties, then Compatibility and select the option to run under Windows 95 mode. If the program is not proprietary in nature to you or your company, I will be glad to test it myself if you can zip the exe and whatever other files that I would need to do so and attach it to your next post. Regards. . . jcgriff2
