I am 8000 miles from home and I use my cpu to speak with my family. I have been unable to speak with them for a week now and this is why.
OK I have a new toshiba A205-S6808 When I turn on my laptop I get the msg saying WINDOWS ERROR RECOVERY launch startup repair (recommended) *The problem started after I connected a flash drive.* * I am using Windows Vista.* So for example startup repair: after checking my system for problems and attempting repairs it keeps going to the black screen and at the bottom of the black screen it says: MICROSOFT CORPERATION with the loading bar over it. That is as far as it will go. It has stayed there for hours. (since I gave up and went to sleep) The OS is still there since it comes up in safe mode. The startup repair cannot repair this computer automatically. Re: 8000 miles from home
panamag741,
Sorry if this is an obvious question - but did you remove the flash/removeable drive and attempt to reboot? Have you tried bringing your PC up in Safe Mode (Press/Hold F8 BEFORE Windows starts to boot and pick "Safe Mode" from the menu). With the flash drive(s) removed, boot, press/hold F8 and try "Last known good configuration". Let me know. - John

Re: 8000 miles from home
When I tried
press/hold F8 and try "Last known good configuration" it went straight to the black screen with the load bar at the bottom. and underneath that it says microsoft corporation just like before. It will stay there until I turn it off manually. |

Re: 8000 miles from home
panamag741,
Bring the PC up in Safe Mode. Open up My Computer, right-click on the C: drive, click on Properties, click on the "Tools" tab, click on the "Check Now" button, click BOTH boxes and click the Start button. If it asks you to schedule a scan, click "Yes". Restart the machine (normal mode) and see if a scan disk runs. - John

Re: 8000 miles from home
panamag741,
If you can't start from the hard drive, you'll need the XP Install CD (same version that's installed on this PC). You need to boot from that CD, then Pick "R" for repair, bring up the Windows Recovery Console, login to the copy of Windows on C: (need Administrator Password). At the command prompt, type: CHKDSK C: /R press <Enter> key. After this has completed, run it again - then type Remove the CD ROM EXIT press <Enter> key This will reboot. See if this lets you bring Windows up. - John

Re: 8000 miles from home
See the problem is he is using Vista and not XP
![]() Do these steps in order and what ever one applies to you If you have the Windows Vista installation disc, follow these steps to use the Startup Repair tool: 1. Insert the installation disc. *** The computer must be configured to start from a CD or from a DVD. For information about how to configure the computer to start from a CD or from a DVD, see the information that came with the computer. 2. Restart the computer. To do this, click Start, click the arrow next to the Lock button, and then click Restart. *** If you cannot restart the computer by using this method, use the power button to turn off the computer. Then, turn the computer back on. 3. Set your language preference, and then click Next. *** In most cases, the startup repair process starts automatically, and you do not have the option to select it in the System Recovery Options menu. 4. Click Repair your computer. 5. In the System Recovery Options dialog box, click the operating system that you want to repair, and then click Next. 6. In the System Recovery Options menu, click Startup Repair to start the repair process. 7. When the repair process is complete, click Finish. If the computer has preinstalled recovery options, follow these steps to use the Startup Repair tool. 1. Remove all floppy disks, CDs, and DVDs from the computer, and then restart the computer. 2. Press and hold the F8 key as the computer restarts. You must press the F8 key before the Windows logo appears. If the Windows logo appears, you must restart and try again. 3. In Advanced Boot Options, use the arrow keys to select Repair the computer, and then press ENTER. 4. Click a keyboard layout in the list, and then click Next. 5. Click a user name in the list, enter the password, and then click OK. 6. In the System Recovery Options menu, click Startup Repair. 7. When the repair process is complete, click Finish. Hopefully this should automatically fix the boot up issue however If there is a missing or corrupt file from the boot manager 1. Start Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE). 2. During Startup Repair, at the Do you want to restore your computer using System Restore? message, click Cancel. 3. Computer restarts, Startup Repair runs again for a total of three times. 4. At the Startup Repair cannot repair this computer automatically screen, click Don't send. 5. In Windows cannot repair the computer automatically screen, click View advanced options for system recovery and support. 6. At System Recovery Options, click Command Prompt. 7. At the Command Prompt, type C:, and press ENTER. 8. Type bcdedit, then press ENTER. 9. Under the heading Windows Boot Manager, verify "default {default}" exist. 10. Type, bcdedit /delete {default}, then press ENTER. 11. Type, bootrec /rebuildbcd, then press ENTER. Answer Yes to any prompt by pressing y, then pressing ENTER. *** If this is run without deleting the default entry, the procedure fails. 12. Type exit, then press ENTER. 13. Click Restart. Hopefully these steps should rectify your issue, if it doesn't please post back straight away Regards Craig |

Re: 8000 miles from home
ok i tried both ways. going in safe mode it wouldn't let me do anything and said it couldn't run when it was being used and if I wanted to schedule.
Then I went step by step going into the command prompt per your instructions and everything seemed to work great, that is until I hit restart and it went right back to the same black screen with the loading bar at the bottom. |

Re: 8000 miles from home
Hey
1. Reboot PC pressing F8 until the advanced boot option appears 2. Select Repair Your Computer 3. Select Command Prompt on the next screen 4. Enter the following at the command prompt: bootrec /fixboot and hit enter 5. Then type bootrec /fixmbr and hit enter 6. Reboot PC pressing F8 until the advanced boot option appears 7. Select Safe Mode With Command Prompt 8. If it makes it to the desktop in Command prompt type the following perfmon /report and hit enter This should generate a System Diagnostics report which should tells us if the system crashed due to the flash drive itself or driver compatibility. Post the results of this, it should say under hardware, failed and tell you what exactly it failed on, hopefully it hasn't failed ![]() Regards Craig |

Re: 8000 miles from home
If its the first part with command prompt from the Repair Your Computer menu then you will have to reboot and press F8
If its the second part of the process then yes you can carry on as long as you have access to the command prompt in save mode ![]() Regards Craig |
