Hi,

I have a sharing problem between my Laptop and desktop.
The Laptop is Windows Vista Home Premium SP1, the Desktop is XP Pro SP2. They're connected to a Level1 WBR3406TX wireless router (The Vista Wi-Fi the XP ethernet)

I used to have a sharing between them, included mapped drives from the XP in the Vista and a Printer attached to the XP that could be used as a network printer in the Vista. I used RDP from the Vista to control the XP.

Suddenly, one day, everything stopped.

I made many things to fix this, and the latest findings are the following:

1. Another XP laptop that was connected to the network had access to the shared files in the XP desktop just by typing \\XP-PCname in the address bar, while typing the same in the Vista gives an error. Pinging the XP PC name gives an error, while pinging the IP address gives replies.
2. LLTD responder (KB922120) was installed in the XP.
3. MSTSC console can be used from the Vista to the XP. 4. In Vista's network map, the XP, including its IP and MAC addresses appear altough it is not "clickable".
5. In the Vista, the "Network Discovery" is "ON".

All of the following possible solutions have been made:

1. Format the XP PC and fresh reinstallation - Failed.
2. Hard reset the Router and reconfigure - Failed.
3. Check the sharing options in the XP - Failed. (As commented before, sharing with another XP suceeded).
4. NETSH INT IP RESET on the XP - Failed.
5. Manually configuring different IP addresses for both computers (within the valid addresses range) - Failed.
6. Both computers belong to the same network - Failed.
7. Both computers have the same Administrative user - Failed.
8. Network configuration wizard (netsetup.cpl) on the XP - Failed.
9. Disabling of Windows FW on both machines - Failed.
10. No other FW is installed on either machine.

In the beggining, NIS was installed on the Vista, but was uninstalled after a few days of usage, since then the sharing worked 100%, until it didn't.

Given all of these, I would be more than glad to have a solution for this.

Please reply with the make/model of both PCs as well as the make/model of the router, switch or hub involved. Do you have any other Firewall or antivirus software installed on either PC? If so - what is the product/version?

On each PC - open up a command prompt and type:

ipconfig /all > c:\ipconfigpcx.txt <Enter>

where 'x' is 1 for PC1 and 2 for PC2

Open up these files in Notepad, select the text, the copy and past this text in your reply for BOTH PCs.

Try manually accessing the Vista PC from the XP PC by going into Windows Explorer and typing //192.168.123.149 in the address bar. See if this brings up any shares. Visa-versa, try it the other way around from the XP machine by going to //192.168.123.148.

I would enable Netbios over TCP/IP on BOTH PCs as this is how Windows Networking advertises the PC's names.

Just for testing purposes, disable all adapters that you're not using on both PCs. Make sure you don't have "dial a connection" enabled under IE's Tools, Internet Options, Connections tab.

Try pinging the other PC from a command prompt on XP PC (Start, Run, command, ping 192.168.123.194 (the vista pc).

Try this stuff and let me know what happens.

Hi,

I think you missed some of the data - this is not a network problem, since I can access the XP from the Vista via RDP.

The problem is the shares.
Maybe something is misconfigured in the Vista, although I don't know what.
I remind you that I brought another XP laptop that did not have any problems accessing the shares in the XP desktop.

RDP uses completely different IP ports than SMB (Windows File/Printer sharing protocol for Microsoft Networks) so if you can ping and RDP works - this means there's IP connectivity between those PCs - but something is not right with Vista's network settings or file/print sharing configuration.

Have you tried creating shared folders or printers on the Vista PC? If so, can you connect to the Vista PC to these shares from the XP PC?

Have you verified the share permissions on the XP machine? Are the usernames/passwords identical on BOTH the XP and Vista PC? Do you have the built-in firewall enabled on either PC? If so, have you opened up File/Print sharing on both firewalls. Sorry if I'm asking about things you've already tried.

If this doesn't help, here's another thing to try on your vista PC (works only with Vista HOME versions):

NOTE: This is for Vista Home versions.

1. Open the Start Menu.
2. In the white line (Start Search) area, type regedit and press Enter.
3. Click Continue for UAC prompt.
4. In regedit, go to: -HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa
5. In the right pane, right click LmCompatibilityLevel and click Modify.
NOTE: If it doesn't already exist, create a DWORD value named
LmCompatibilityLevel
6. Set the value to 1
7. Reboot

I'm avoiding basic questions like "did you connect the PCs to the same router?" as I feel that such a question would insult your intelligence. If you've had file sharing working before between 2 or more XP machines, then you obviously know that basic stuff about networking.

Something is clearly preventing your Vista PC from accessing those shares on XP. We need to focus on the Vista PC. If you can RDP between the Vista & XP PC, then you obviously have basic IP connectivity.

Question - do you have "Windows Live One Care" installed on your Vista PC? If so, uninstall this and try to access the XP shares again.

I'm running 5 Windows XP-based PCs and 2 Vista-based laptops ALL on the same home networked using both wired and wireless connections to a common router. Not having any problems with either Vista-based laptop connecting to shared printers and folders on various XP-based PCs. I say this because I KNOW this can work. If XP-to-XP sharing works in your environment, then it's unlikely that the problem is the setup of the shares on XP, your router or networking setup. The problem is likely something wrong on the Vista PC which is blocking Vista's ability to see or connect to those XP shares. This could be a blocked IP port (firewalled), a security issue or a corrupted networking/filesharing configuration on your Vista PC.

I've never found any of those Windows "Repair Wizards" to be of much use. They tend to only attempt to resolve very obvious problems. That said, we need to try making some changes on the Vista side, one change at a time until the problem is resolved.

Hi,

Ok, so I tried the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa solution, and went over the Technet doc, no success.
The Vista hasn't got the Live One Care.

I telneted the XP from the Vista on ports 137,138,139 and 445, as described in the Technet doc, and 137, 138 failed.

I went over to check for an old FW (NIS) which was preinstalled with the Vista - it was uninstalled first thing the Laptop arrived home, and the sharing worked after it was uninstalled. I found the Symantec update service, and uninstalled it.

Anyway, I checked both ports are "opened" in the Windows FW, and anyway I disabled the FW - no good.

Is there a way (external program?) that can force opening those clesod ports?

Please, anything else?

On the Vista PC, do the following:

In Windows Vista:

- Open the Network and Sharing Center
- Under Tasks in the left pane, click Manage Network Connections
- Right-click on the Network Connection you are using, and then choose Properties.
- Double-click Internet Prococol (TCP/IP)
- Click Advanced button
- Click the Wins tab
- Click to Enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP, then click Apply and Ok

If this re-runs the network Wizard - make sure you use the SAME Workgroup name as the Workgroup configured on the XP PC.

Reboot BOTH PC's and see if you can browse or even see the XP PC from the Vista PC.

If this doesn't work - then you must have some firewall software installed on one or both of these PCs. Go to Control Panel, Add/Remove programs and look for Internet Security and/or Firewall software such as Norton, McAfee, AVG, etc. In enabled, temporarily disable the built-in XP and Vista firewalls on BOTH PC and try browsing them again. SOMETHING is blocking access between these PCs.
