Cry [SOLVED] Vista won't play or edit .avi files

Hi there. So I just got my fancy new laptop with Vista with SP1 on it. Here's the problem though: it will not play or edit .avi files. Yup, will not play them in Media Player, and then will not let you do anything at all with them in movie maker. It says that there is a codec missing... which is fine and good and all, but the problem is I can't seem to find where to get the codec anywhere. I've just found a lot of dead ends. So if anyone out there knows how to fix this problem... like where to get the codec so I can actually do something with the 40+GB of .avi files I have, it would be greatly appreciated.

Okay... That seems like a little more than I need, and I'm not sure what some of that stuff is... So what part of that thing do I need to install to fix my one problem? Everything else plays, and I really don't want to install a whole bunch of crap I don't need.

Re: Vista won't play or edit .avi files

The K lite codec pack is a great pack to install as it covers all media types including AVI. I have it installed and it only takes up 30mb which is roughly 11mb less than that of any other codec pack. I would install the whole K-Lite codec pack

Regards

Okay. then that brings me to another question... it says that you have to uninstall other codecs that you have... what are they talking about? and then after that it asks what you want to install... do I install everything?

Re: Vista won't play or edit .avi files

The K-Lite codec pack supplies updates for already installed codecs, so to update them it must firstly remove older versions etc
Once it uninstalls the old version you can then go ahead and install the full package

I went ahead and installed this package and another Vista Codec Package to enable WMP to allow the use of 3GP Playback aswell

Regards

im with placehold on this one and
it does not matter if u have any other codec pack or if u have other codec

and i would download the vista codec package that placehold gave

this fix the issue its alot better then haveing to pay for
a media player that has the codec

Re: Vista won't play or edit .avi files

I did download the Vista Codec pack thing he provided, and it starts to install and then says that I should log on as administrator to install it because I don't have enough permissions... only problem is I AM logged in as administrator on this computer... so it won't let me install it. Now what?

ok re-install K-lite and then
right click on the vista codec package and click on run as administrator and then install it

and see if u get the message and then see if that works

but install both of the codec starting with K-lite then vista codec package

Yup, I rebooted and that's the message it gave me... which is the same one it was giving me before I installed k-lite or the vista codec pack.
