Bsod Driver_irql_not_less_or_equal

I recently built a new computer and installed Vista64. Ever since it was built I get random BSOD DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL STOP Xd1
tcpip.sys. In trying to resolve the problem I have gone thru all my drivers several times. I have a gigabyte GA-EP35C-DS3R 2.1 mother board, 8GB DDR2 Gskill memory. Nvidia 8800GTS video card. I rolled back the lan driver to the latest version per the gigabyte web site. I also redownloaded the driver and installed it so that I covered all the bases. I do have mini dumps if someone can decipher. It doesn't seem to happen in safe mode with networking support. Last night it happened with Vista booted in normal mode with the network cable pulled out. I have IPconfig listings from safe mode and normal mode.. There are some differences there..

Any help would be appreciated..

Hi Mike . . .

Welcome to the Tech Support Forum - Vista Support!

I'll take a look at those mini dumps for you. Please get them all - I don't care how many there are. There are a few ither items that I would like - Please run the following -

Belarc Advisor report saved as a web page (html, mht (IE7/8) or as a 2007 (only) Word document docx, or as a Word document. You can download Belarc HERE

DXDiag report - START | type dxdiag into the Start Search box | right-click on dxdiag.exe | select Run as Administrator | respond to User Access Control prompt | Save as a text file.

MS32info NFO file - START | type msinfo32 into the Start Search box | right-click on msinfo32.exe | select Run as Administrator | respond to User Access Control prompt | System Information will then come up | save the report in System Information File (NFO) format by selecting File, then Save As.

Event Logs - Get them all - dozens -They are located in: c:\windows\system32\winevt\logs.

Then zip them up and send to my email - see PM.

Regards. . .

Re: Bsod Driver_irql_not_less_or_equal

Thanks JC. I will work on those things but I hopeful I may have solved the problem only to discover a new problem.. Yesterday I had disabled all my hardware and was still getting the BSOD about every 2-3 hours but the last thing I did yesterday was to un-install a Gigabyte Dynamic Energy Saver program that was loading on every reboot. I've been up ever since. Its never gone more than 12 hours before but its been up 18 hrs so far. I've gotten brave and enabled the video card and on-board lan.
Yesterday when things were crashing I renamed every memory dump so I have a lot.. So i'm keeping my fingers crossed..

Now for the new problem. Yesterday I was poking around in the performance area and I ran across a screen that said I had 8GB of physical ram installed (which I do - 4x2GB) but it also said that total physical memory available was only 4gb.. Geez, did I waste my money buying the extra 4gb. I am running Vista 64. Any ideas.

When I built this system I installed the vista64 with the full 8gb installed. Also I did not install the >4gb patch for several days after installation (didn't see the fine print). Do I need to reinstall the Vista?? If so, what's the best way of doing that..

Thanks.

Re: Bsod Driver_irql_not_less_or_equal

Hi Mike. . .

I have some results for you from the memory dumps. I know that you have made many changes to your system since the dumps were created, so the following may or may not be helpful.

Several Microsoft drivers were listed but mostly tcpip.sys.

A program named powercfg.exe came up twice as a BSOD cause. This program must be executed from the command prompt (DOS Box) and has to do with your systems power configuration. I don't know if a program in your system is running it - but something/someone certainly is.

Lastly, a program named gst.exe along with a driver named gdr.sys showed up as BSOD causes as well. I have not been able to find anything on ether of these two. Do you have any ideas?

Regards. . .

Re: Bsod Driver_irql_not_less_or_equal

The system had seemed more stable since I uninstalled the GST. However, the other night I went to ABC.COM x2 to watch an episode and I got the BSOD x2. Microsoft suggested reinstalling the Vista.. I was already to do that today but then I changed a bios setting and now I really have to reinstall vista.. I'm trying to get an answer on the bios settings first though. How are you on bios settings?

there are two disk controllers on the mb.. One is Intel and the other is Gigabyte. The intel controller is configured as RAID with 2 HDs. I have a sata blu-ray dvd drive which I connected to the gigabyte sata controller. It was originally setup as IDE then then I changed the gigabyte sata controller to AHCI and the windows vista is not happy. I was planning on reinstalling vista anyway. Should it be set to ide or ahci..

Re: Bsod Driver_irql_not_less_or_equal

Hi Mike. . .

What exactly is your question regarding the BIOS setting... I mean other than the default?

I will ask someone more knowledgeable with hardware than I am to answer/provide advice on the BIOS front as well as the hard drive issues.

Any questions related to the re-install of Vista? I can tell you that I have done this task many times and I would tell you to simply be aware of any trial version programs - even if you choose not to install them. You just may find that they do in fact at least partially install as was the case with one of my systems recently which lead to problems with Microsoft Office 2007. You can read about that HERE, if you wish.

Good Luck to you. . .

jcgriff2(JC)

Re: Bsod Driver_irql_not_less_or_equal

JC, reinstallation of the Vista appears to have resolved the problem. I removed all the ram but 2gb, installed the vista, and then in 2gb increments, installed the rest of the ram. I also set the gigabyte sata controller to AHCI.
There was something peculiar in the ram.
When there was 2gb ram, the advanced system said there was 2gb physical installed and 2gb total physical. When 4 gb was installed the system said there was 4gb physical installed and 4gb total physical. However, when 6gb was installed the system said there was 6gb physical installed and 2gb total physical. When 8gb was installed the system said there was 8gb physical installed and 4gb total physical.

I saw this same phenomenon before the vista was re-installed.
