New Laptop with vista using 60% CPU while Idle
I'm new to windows vista and recently purchase a Toshiba laptop from a friend. When I look in the task manager under performance my CPU is running a least 60% all the time. Is this normal? On my XP laptop I would have a system Idle that would show the percentage when not in use. Just thinking it has something to do with vista. Anyone else experienced this?

Re: New Laptop with vista using 60% CPU while Idle
Hi Smile. . .
Welcome to the Tech Support Forum - Vista Support! I know exactly what you mean about the CPU - I remember thinking the same thing... why is this running so much? One reason that I have found is due to Vista's Superfetch system. It is the successor-to-be of XP's Prefetch, which moves the programs and files from the hard drive (based on user history) and has them ready to go into memory - like the 2nd stage between RAM and the hard drive, hence the term "PRE-fetch or now Superfetch. Also, Vista saves its house cleaning chores and does them during idle periods of time so as not to interfere with the user. There are many opinions on this and hopefully you will hear them. Regards. . . jcgriff2 .

Re: New Laptop with vista using 60% CPU while Idle
That seems a bit excessive to me ..... any clue as to what processes are "active" ??
What security programs do you have installed? Perhaps you have one that does its activities whilst the pc is idle ..... defragging, scanning etc ?? Liverbird |
