VISTA overode my Windows 2000

Can anyone explain......

I bought an IBM thinkpad X20 in the year 2000....with windows 2000 loaded on it...For eight years it ran Windows 2000..

I replaced the laptop with an IBM thinkpad T40 in January running on Windows XP.

Three days ago,I bootup the one that was supposedly to be running Win 2000,and never really realized it was loading up WINDOWS VISTA..Anyway it was not until I went to the control panel,that I observed the difference.

Then I was like the PC is messed up.....seem like I have some spyware or vrus or some shyt"...
I went to START,RUN and type WINVER.......Guess what..it showed as WINDOWS VISTA....Rebooted the PC,and it said again windows vista.Browser and all is different..One thing I forgot to look at was the version of IE,since I was heading out the door to work.

From 2000 to 2008 the computer ran on windows 2000.How in the world can a PC,Bypass XP and jump to VISTA?

Not that I am mad at the thought,but how on earth can that be..I NEVER did an upgrade to XP.

I don't know what has happened but Microsoft does not automatically upgrade operating systems. Someone must have installed Vista on your machine without telling you. Is that possible?
