Internet Security - help needed
Hi, I'm new to computers so please go easy on me and give me an idiots guide.
I had a free 30 day Norton security installed on my pc from new and it's due to expire when i go on hoilday so I've deleted it and paid for an instant download of AVG 8.0. However, I have a message on the interface which states: 'you are not protected, please check the following components:' Firewall: stopped Email Scanner: not fully functional Web Shield: driver not found Link scnner: not fully functional My pc is for use at home and is not linked to any others. Are these functions important for single use pc's; more importantly am I protected for Internet use? I've contacted the AVG online support via email but not received a reply. Any help would be appreciated. |

Hi smurf77 - Welcome to the Tech Support Forum - Vista Support! I believe that Norton somehow stopped AVG from installing fully. So, I suggest that you go into SAFEMODE and run the Norton Removal Tool, found HERE which should get more of Norton out of your system. Then re-boot, and if you are still having problems with AVG, I suggest that you in-install it then re-install it after a reboot. Good Luck. Regards. . . jcgriff2 .

Re: Internet Security - help needed
Hi Smurf and welcome :)
You say you "deleted Norton and Paid for a download of AVG 8". When you say deleted, I take it you uninstalled the program by using "programs and features" in the control panel or by using an uninstaller belonging to the program? Using the Norton Removal tool, mentioned above, this will remove anything at all left behind by Norton. AVG 8 is the new and latest version from Grisoft ---- you do know that there is a free version of this for home users? Anyway, as you have bought a version we need to get it set up correctly. After using the Norton removal tool (which incidently doesn't always have to be run in Safe Mode from my experience) reboot the pc then check the status of AVG, if problems still apparent then uninstall it using Programs and Features in the control panel. To uninstall a program: click start/control panel/ depending on what view you have set you will need to select uninstall a program/programs and features, locate the program and click once on it to highlight it, now use the "uninstall" button from the top menu. You will now need to locate the "installer" or "setup" file to the downloaded purchase of AVG and start over again with installing it. In Windows Vista, the likely place to find the original download is in the "downloads" folder, found by clicking on Start/your user name from top of the list on the right/then Downloads folder Let us know how you go with the above procedures and then we'll take it from there. Re: Internet Security - help needed
@smurf77 - that should thake care of things for you.
@Liverbird - Nice to see you again, and if I may say so... very well done! And yes... you are correct in that you do not have to run the Norton removal tool in SAFEMODE, I prefer to to give it more room to breather with the reduction of start-up programs and non-critical services.
