[SOLVED] Vista x64 unzipping problems
Greetings techies. I've got a little problem thats been causing loads of frustration. WinZip and 7-Zip seems to freeze my computer every time I try to extract big files. I've done a little research on it already, and appearantly its a common problem in vista. For some reason, vista's default compressor seems to conflict with 3rd party compressors, and causes it to crash Explorer. There was a solution for it, but unfortunately it was no help to me. The solution involved deleting the Reg Keys for vista's default zipper, thus uninstalling it (or running vistaunzip), but I have vista x64, and I think the Reg Keys are different. The keys that were listed for deletion don't show up on my regedit, and the vistaunzip executable does nothing for me. I also tried using ShellExView to disable its explorer shell extensions, but that didn't work either. I really need a solution to this problem, because vista's default compressor isn't going to work for what I need it for. If someone can list the Reg Keys for vista x64's version of the zipper so I can delete them, or give me an alternate solution, I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks in advanced.
Also, on ShellExView, I seem to be missing a shell extension that was shown in the tutorial I found online. Like I mentioned, it may be because x32 and x64's compressors are different, but I'm not sure. Hope this screenshot helps. Last edited by Tusken : 05-04-2008 at 01:12 AM. |

Re: Vista x64 unzipping problems
Oh, sorry about that. I've got a Q6700 Quad Core, 4gigs of RAM, I'm using a 150gig WD Raptor Drive that currently has 76gigs free, and a 750 Samsung Drive that has 578gigs free, and I'm using an XFX Nforce 690i LT SLI board. If you need any more information, just let me know.
Also, I've had both of these harddrives exchanged for new ones because I thought that may have been the problem. I've also tested them with older Windows versions, and I've had no problem. Last edited by Tusken : 05-04-2008 at 04:09 PM. |

Re: Vista x64 unzipping problems
Thats the one I've been trying. I tried using 7-Zip and Winrar also. They all cause it to freeze. The tutorial I read mentioned that it does this with all 3rd party unzippers, so I don't think the problem lies in which program you use. I just need to get rid of Vista's default unzipper, and I have no idea how

Re: Vista x64 unzipping problems
Alright, I've found a solution to the problem. For anyone else that might have this problem:
http://www.annoyances.org/exec/show/article03-202 I was correct, the 64 bit version's registry keys are not the same as the 32 bit vista version. The only difference, though, is that their located under different root folders. If you're running 64 bit and you want to disable the default compressor, do it the manual way (open Regedit), but instead of looking for the keys in the root folders stated in the tutorial, click on the Edit tab, and click find (or press Ctrl+F) and copy and paste the two keys stated in the tutorial. Delete them, restart, and you're done. |
