Vista keeps freezing - Help needed!

Hi everyone, I stumbled across this forum accidentally via google and since you all seem a helpful bunch I was hoping you could help me, it would be greatly appreciated.

A few days ago I bought a new computer (system specs should be in my profile for reference) with vista ultimate 64 bit installed. It's working beautifully so far except for one major problem, it freezes constantly! Whenever I open up a game I can play for about 10 minutes to half an hour (sometimes less) and then the whole thing will just freeze. At one point it even happened while I was compressing a new .rar archive. I've tried everything I can to fix the problem, updating and installing and reinstalling drivers many times over, updated vista, reinstalled vista on a clean install, tried with nothing but updated nvidia drivers and I still get it.

Right now after the format I'm on a fully updated sp1 system and of course it's still happening. I'm at my wits end here and nothing I try will make it go away. This basically makes my computer unusable for my needs as I'm primarily a gamer. I really don't want to go back to xp, as I love Vista but I'm gloomily facing that outcome if I can't find any way to get it working properly.

Hey.

Maybe your problem is not with vista but the software you're using, could you name the games that make vista freeze? and what compression utility you were using to compress the .rar archive?

Has this always happened? or is it a new thing?

And could you describe the "freeze", does the computer just freeze (needing restarting to fix it?) or is it recoverable without re-starting your pc?

It's a complete lock-up, can't recover it without restarting. As for software so far I've tested Morrowind and Hellgate:London which have had the same problem. I've googled around a bit and it seems like other people have the same problem as me, but I can't find a solution. Also the only time it did freeze outside of a game was when I was using winrar to make a .rar archive.

This has always happened so far, except for about a few hours at the very beginning.

Hmm, if it's always happened then it's probably a problem with compatibility or something along the lines of that. Have you looked for 64 bit patches for the games (or alternative versions for 64 bit vista?) i don't know whether it will make a big difference. It does seem that 64-bit vista does have some compatibility issues with some pieces of software. Maybe monitering the other people's difficulties with the games, etc. may lead to an answer?

I don't think it's the games itself, I know and know of many people who play the same games with no problem. It did work for about a day when I first installed it, but even after a clean reformat and reinstall of everything (before and after updating I tested it) it still happens.

You are not alone. I am having the same problem with Vista 64 ultimate. After a short period of time my system will freeze and nothing will fix the problem but a reboot. No BSOD and since it is a freeze I have no error messages in the event logs.
