Confused vista sp1 install stops at step 1 of 3, 99% - no update can be removed

hey guys, i really got a huge problem there. i'm a newbie here and i'd really appreciate it if someone can help me - the problem did not only start with installing vista sp1 which i did yesterday but already before with an update.
now i can't get rid of any updates with the uninstall function - i get an error message.

and even though the sp1 installed correctly (according to the information the install-wizard showed right after installing), my laptop just goes on an on trying to install it when i want to turn it off.

now what can i do? i'm really happy that my laptop did not seize to work completely but i can't accept the fact that it still tries to install the sp1 and i'm a little desperate

Hi Markus. . .

Welcome to the Tech Support Forum - Vista Support!

I received your windows log. I looked at it briefly. Did you download and attempt to install SP1 or did it come to you through Windows Updates originally? Did you ever install SP1 - beta (test) versions within the last few months?

Were you logged on with an admin account?

regards...

Re: vista sp1 install stops at step 1 of 3, 99% - no update can be removed

I got the SP1 via Windows Update but I had them deactivated so I had to accpet it and then ran the Update.

Yes, I was logged on as an admin and I didn't download any beta SP1 because I didn't know about the SP1 until my Windows Download Center told me about it.

I'll save the log file later on and post it - thx so far.

Hi Markus. . .

In the portion of the log you sent me, it appears that there were two updates that came in prior to SP1. Now it shows that Windows Updates is issuing a call-back for at least one of those updates every few seconds but your system is telling them it does not have it.

I think right now it would be best to perform a system restore - choose a restore point

I think the best thing to do now is a System Restore to three or four days ago before all this took place.

START | type rstrui.exe in the start search box | right-click on rstrui.exe | select run as administrator | answer the User Access Control prompt - Continue/or password

regards...

the only restore point i have back that far is "Update windows vista service pack 1", no restore point prior to this

i'll try it anyway, thank you :)

Re: vista sp1 install stops at step 1 of 3, 99% - no update can be removed

I did the system restore now but I realized the SP1 was installed multiple times (starting on the 21st) and still wants to be installed.
therefore the restore did not help me, I fear the prolem cannot be solved with a restore point, there are no restore points before the 21st saved on my computer.

is there a way to uninstall the updates somehow? because with windows update and the update history there, I can't uninstall them, I keep getting error messages.

thx and have a nice weekend

Hi. . .

run this before we look to take SP1 and other April 21/22 updates out.

Bring up an Elevated command prompt via:
START | type cmd into the start search box | right-click on cmd (cmd.exe) | select "Run as Administrator"

then in the command prompt (DOS) box type:

sfc /scannow

hit enter

let it run - +/- 10 min

Hey Markus. . .

I got the system report and what I find interesting in it is that it shows SP1 as installed - but yet your system version number still shows up as pre-SP1.

I noticed that you have Norton Internet Security - when was this installed? If it is active, can you disable the Norton firewall?

regards. . .

Re: vista sp1 install stops at step 1 of 3, 99% - no update can be removed

two more problems occurred:
I uninstalled Norton two days ago but it still listed in "programs" and when I try to uninstall it again, it does not work ("no install log files found") - it was never active anyway.

The scannow won't run, "the system waits for a system repair which requires a reboot. reboot your computer and then start sfc again"

It also seems that nothing systemic is safed anymore, for example the notes you can safe on the desktop using the miniature... (I'm not sure if this has got to do anything with the SP1 problems ...)
sorry for all the trouble

Hi. .

Boot-up into SAFEMODE - tap the F8 key repeatedly during boot-up.

Try sfc there.
