can't install sp 1

I've been in touch with MS for about 2 weeks regarding vista sp1 . I am unable to install it , I have tried disabling all virus and spyware protection , and running it in safe mode but to no avail .

I am clean of all malware , thanks to the excellent Ried .

I get an error code "0x800F081F" every time I try and install it.

I have an advent 8315 laptop , running vista home premium .

One problem I've had is the system file checker will only run to 5% then stops functioning , but other than that , no problems with the comp .

(sorry forgot to mention that when I restart vista I get a boot screen with options of "windows vista " which is a crashed startup and "windows vista recovered " which is the one that works )

Any help very greatfully received

Re: can't install sp 1

It got "the tech guys " crap on it from pcworld . As far as I can tell it will only recover as far as making vista bootable . There is no repair option .

If I have to do a full restore , if I use the windows backup system will it save my internet passwords and programs or will it just backup documents, videos and pictures ?

Can't I repair the files that the file checker (verifyonly works but scannow doesn't) flags up as corrupt .

One problem I've had is opening the log file for sfc . It opened once but now it says "access denied" .

Cheers

Re: can't install sp 1

Hi,

if i may add my 2 cents...

Here's some instructions in doing Repair of Vista (startup repair) from Microsoft:

http://windowshelp.microsoft.com/Win...f3f351033.mspx

About the passwords, bookmarks, files should be safe if you do the Startup Repair but then again we cannot guarantee this. Doing a back up now is good and encouraged, if it is still possible. But if it is not since you cannot boot up to Vista, I do not think you have any choice unless of course you take your hard drive and attach it to another computer via USB or adapter and pump your data from there.

so i suggest you do the startup install first and let us know what happens.

I'm confused now , My comp is running ok , apart from the sp1 issue . All that seems to be causing the problems are corrupt system files (possibly corrupted by a malware problem thats been fixed by Ried .

As for the startup repair , I shall check now !

yup, possibly corrupted by the malware. Start up repair could help.

EDIT:
Apologies for me thinking that you cannot boot to Vista. I have misread the thread.

In this MS doc http://support.microsoft.com/kb/947366/en-us it also shows the steps on how to install SP1. i think these steps are worth a try too. i tried to search also on the error that you got but i always end up with 'asking MS for help' or to install SP1 via the windows update. there seems to be no solid conclusion or clear cut solution to the problem as of the moment. i am thinking if a fresh install of Vista could help but you could also lose your personal files in the process.

Is it possible to love and hate an os at the same time
I just have a system repair that only seem to fix the boot file for vista but does not repair vista system files !

Bas*ards !

On the upside , in the last couple of weeks I've learnt more about my comp than I would have if it was running correctly !

Re: can't install sp 1

this doesn't look good then...

i have read in the thread that you tried sfc /scannow and you said it does not work. can you still recall the message or the error? to access the CBS.log you should be logged in as Administrator.

by the way what Vista install DVD do you have (retail, OEM, etc.)?

Re: can't install sp 1

It gets to 5% in the verification phase then stops and says " windows resource protection could not perform the requested operation "
But if I run sfc /verifyonly it runs to completion .

On the log file problem , when I right click on the file , the open as admin option is not there . Even if I run notepad as admin it still won't work .

Re: can't install sp 1

hi,

please check and see if you have tried the steps for sfc as indicated in this page:

http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/66...c-command.html

to be allowed access to CBS.log, try disabling UAC:

http://www.petri.co.il/disable_uac_in_windows_vista.htm

Hi. . .

I'd like to get some system info from you to start off.

First, a Belarc Advisor report saved in "mht" format (Top right of Internet Explorer screen; Page; Saved as; save as mht), as a web page or a Word document. You can download Belarc HERE.

See my PM for my email address - DO NOT post this report here.

Regards. . .

jcgriff2
