Re: can't install sp 1
Hi. . . Please tell me about your hard drive - s: in particular - 1.57GB w/ 1.30GB free space. Have you ever deleted files from this drive? I am just getting into your CBS log - 10,000++ lines long - but I am seeing the Windows Updates going to drive s: for files that are not there. Also c:\windows\winsxs file repository seems to be missing some original copies of files ... and also file permission settings and file ownership on Program FIles folder/subfolder and common/shared folder an issue (issuing acl commands) - and also with some registry keys. CBS log starts back on Feb 2, 2008, and seems to be well through March 30 @ 16:26 hrs. Then all quiet until April 16 -15:02 hrs - then all hell starts breaking loose and never ends. When did you consult with Microsoft on this? Do you know of file permission settings/ take ownership? REGEDIT? Also - There might be a hidden partition on your hard drive. The drive is 120.3GB in size, yet drive c: = 112.69GB and s: = 1.57GB == 114.26GB. Now, the format of windows - NTFS - can account for some discrepancy, but a factory setting of Vista may be there. Regards. . . jcgriff2

Re: can't install sp 1
I have never deleted anything from the s drive , I thought it was part of the restore system for vista .
I just downloaded avg 8 , and halfway thru its scan and it's picked up a ton of adware and trojans ! April 16 has no significance for me . As for the other stuff , maybe to do with the malware problem that was preventing security centre and windows updater working properly . If I make a reboot , I'm worried that the backup I have will be infected with the virus/spyware which was probably in vista when I created it . |

Re: can't install sp 1
It appears I've had a major infection of trojans , vundo , zlob , conhook to name just a few . What the hell !.
Why didn't avg , or adaware pick them up ? I downloaded avg 8 today and it's picking up loads . Wether they are active or remnants of old infections ,I don't know . I have a copy of mcafee security suite which was supplied by my new broadband provider . Is it any good ? Maybe I should change Edit , they are registry keys Last edited by Handyosprey : 04-27-2008 at 04:53 AM. |

Re: can't install sp 1
Hi. . .
I believe at this time you should consider a complete re-format and re-install of Vista. Based on what I see in that CBS log, all reasonable hope is lost for this system. There are just too many system files and their backups that are corrupted. Then there is the registry - an absolute mess. Regards. . . jcgriff2

Re: can't install sp 1
Hi. .
The "backups" that I was referring to would be located on the c: hard drive. If you have a hidden recovery partition on your system (most likely drive d:) it shoud not be affected. Good Luck to You. . . jcgriff2

Re: can't install sp 1
Restored vista , all updates successful . Haven't tried sp1 yet , I think I'll wait for it to download via windows update . My backup made by vista has failed , one of the discs is corrupt !
Know of any recovery software ? Thanks for your help p.s. Have installed mcafee security suite , try and prevent any more infestations . |

I have 4 dvd+r and the last disc made is unreadable , it's showing the disc is virtually full but when I open it , it's blank ! Sp1 is now installed ! WOOHOO ! ![]() |

Re: can't install sp 1
I'm careful to scan anything downloaded , and was firewalled , so how I got infected so badly I don't know . I think I got zlob trojan first from a dodgy codec pack , wasn't picked up by the scanner .
How windows firewall and avast and then avg didn't pick up the bloody things , I'll never know . |
