Wireless and cable connection
Not sure if this is a networking problem or a Windows problem but here goes.
I have a laptop running Windows Vista Home and a Desktop running Windows XP Home. They both connect to the internet through a Netgear DG834G wireless router with no problem. I can also copy files between the two wirelessly but the speed of copying is extremely slow so I wondered if I could disable the Wi-Fi connection and use a crossover cable between the two when copying files (for the speedier transfer). I just cannot get the two connected using a crossover cable and an added problem is that when I reinstalled Windows XP Home after a driver problem the Local Area Connection was not reinstalled. I have an on board NIC but each time I boot up I'm told I have new hardware but the drivers will not install. My router has four network ports, would it be easier to use a patch cable from each machine to the router? Any comments/suggestions welcome oh and I'm reasonably experienced with computers but not so much with networking. |
