Administrator - Vista problem
I've just bought a new PC running Vista Home Premium and, at the moment, wish I hadn't.
I had backed up my files from previous XP PC. But there are so many files I can't open or move because I need permission, yet I am the only user of the PC. Some of the files were encrypted with XP which doesn't help. Can anyone help me out here please. (in simple terms for a near novice please) Many thanks |

Re: Administrator - Vista problem
Many thanks for that.
Downloaded Takecontrol. I need to take control of external ' j ' drive. Can someone tell me exactly what to type in command prompt please. I'm totally useless with command prompt. |

Re: Administrator - Vista problem
Hello alexfooty
1. Open Command prompt as administrator 2. Then type in the following command: takeown /f thefilename.exe *You should get a success message once this is completed. Quote: SUCCESS: The file (or folder): "C:\Filesz\thefilename.exe" now owned by user "YourComputerName\Yourusername" That will give you ownership of the file, but you still have no rights to delete it 3. For full control rights to the file type: cacls myfile.exe /G username:F *You need to substitute your user name in place of username. Notes * To take ownership of a folder and all its content type: takeown /f . /r * To get the Administrators group instead of the current user type: takeown /f intlcfg.exe /a regards Craig

Re: Administrator - Vista problem
Thanks for that. Sorry to be a complete pain but....
The folder I want control of is not on ' C Drive '. It's on an external drive ' j Drive ' The location is - 'j drive' - 'Alex' - 'Computer' and a particular file called 'Pword' But ideally I'd like full control over all the files in 'Computer' folder Can you tell me exactly what to type please. Apologies for being incompetent with Command Prompt. |
