Security and protected modes in Vista/IE7

Third post in one day with difficulties just trying to do some work on a new Vista machine.
Can anyone pour some cool water over me please...

Windows, or IE7, is now blocking a very simple 'mouseover' script on my own very simple and very safe website. (Both online and from the local disk files.)

I'd managed to stop it doing it until I had to switch off the user account settings (I'm the only user) in order to install WinZip. Now the browser is blocking anything that isn't the most basic HTML. (And getting baffling warnings everytime I startup about 'selective mode'...)

Also, a picture with a simple link to another site is being blocked as a 'pop up'.

I've enabled everything in the security settings but it still blocks everything. It shows the mouseover code in huge letters all over the screen.

This is enough to prevent anyone visiting the site being able to view anything at all - if they have the same (default) settings...

I've also toggled the disable / enable 'protected mode' switch (can't seem to find out what precisely that is or where you alter its settings, if any), but it makes no difference.

How do I get IE back to a usable state please???

There's no other weird stuff running on this machine, its brand new out of the box.

cheers,
Ian

Re: Security and protected modes in Vista/IE7

Hi Craig
Thanks, I tried your suggestions.

I still can't stop the mouseover script from being blocked and showing as text on the page. I can allow it for one instance on the information bar but it returns the next time.

There is supposed to be a 'settings for me' option on the 'information bar' but I'm not seeing that.

Should I turn on the user account thing again? This seemed to start since I switched it off earlier.

cheers,
Ian

Re: Security and protected modes in Vista/IE7

Yeah i would try temporarily disabling the UAC and try to see if that option appears.
It should look like the Active X bar that pops down when Active X is not allowed however upon saying that even CSS and the basic embedded HTML mouseovers aren't yet compatible with IE7. IE8 acid tests have showing that they are working on making this more compatible with the operations of the average user. My advice is if you wanted to test and make sure the mouse over works use Firefox,Opera or Safari

Regards

Re: Security and protected modes in Vista/IE7

Thanks Craig,
good thought. I wasn't aware of that issue.
Yes it works fine on Firefox, etc.

Oddly though, this problem is now only cropping up when I view my pages from the computer files.
From the server it works fine!

I've been though the raw stats from my site and there are no errors, nothing missing, and people getting to the pages okay, including those using IE7, so other people must be viewing okay.

Btw, I've removed the unused pre-installed Norton software - many of the other constant toolbar warnings about security, that I thought were Microsoft, have now vanished...

many thanks for your help,
best,
Ian

Now I need to jump forums and sort out my Outlook issues!

Re: Security and protected modes in Vista/IE7

Hi Craig.
(1) I am having trouble with vista basic since a recent reinstall. I tried to go inti IE advanced setting to make a few changes as you suggested. I am unable to make any changes at the bottom of the boxit reads, "some settings are managed by your system administrator." On my previos version of vista i had ran for a year I never had any messages like that. (2) On a similar note I am unable to print from IE and a few other applications. I receive a message that says, "This action is restricted, for more information please contact your system administrator." I have no idea how to fix these totally frustrating problems. I am the only user on my Compaq Presario C503wm Laptop, I log in with an administrator account, and would love to meet the "System Admministrator" that seems to control me on a computer that I am only user. I am so frustrated and do not want to any changes that may affect future use of MY computer. I would greatly appreciate any help or suggestions you may have for me and my "Administrator" friend. Thanks again

Re: Security and protected modes in Vista/IE7

Know the feeling!

But I think you should post this as a new thread if you want a reply.

I still can't figure out "administrator" stuff. I can't even send emails now because of 'permissions' apparently. The KB fix I had to go find doesn't describe what I have on this system.

This is a new machine out of the box. It aint me...
I didn't want Vista, that's all they sell now.

What other products on the market would you accept as not working properly after you paid for it good money for it? Like a car where the steering wheel doesn't do anything. You would just take it back: "Yeah, nice shiny polish on the outside, but give me one that goes where I want it to!"

Re: Security and protected modes in Vista/IE7

Hey christyjo

Welcome to TSF

Hey Ian

lol sorry i havent replied straight away, things have been slightly busy lol

Now to make sure that you have full control over the system there are a couple of ways to do so

Firstly check that you have system administrator priviligies

A. Start\Control Panel\User Accounts and Family Safety\User Accounts\Change your account type

Now under your picture it will tell you what priviligies you have,If your not the admin the the admin box will automatically be selected for you

B. Right click on Internet Explorer and Run as administrator
this will allow you to access those features

C.
1. Right click on Internet Explorer shortcut and select properties.
2. Select security Tab
3. Select Edit
4. Select your name and check all the allow boxs
5. Click ok and ok again

You should now be able to run that program without having any issues

Regards

Craig

Re: Security and protected modes in Vista/IE7

Hi Craig, looks like I can't keep away from the place.

I checked out the properties on IE as you described.
SYSTEM
IanS(Admin)
Toshiba(Admin)
The check boxes are were not editable, but all three had ticks in 'allowed' in all of them.

What interested me was what's shown in the Advanced tab here. Its very similar to what I had to edit in Regedit to get Outlook to remember my account passwords. (No luck there.)

I didn't tinker as I have no idea what I'm doing.

If its permissions that are stopping Outlook from remembering passwords, why does Windows Mail remember them ok?

Btw, right-clicking the IE icon to run as admin produced a warning box -
"An unidentified program wants to access your computer.
iexplore.exe - Unidentified Publisher
"

-chuckle... but something doesn't feel right around here!

many thanks
Ian

Re: Security and protected modes in Vista/IE7

Windows live mail,i use it and its vey very good but for some reason its like Microsoft have created a new product altogether rather than a new version of outlook. In my opinion outlook is getting old and as far as i am aware they haven't released any new updates to fix the permissions settings in Outlook for a long time. It could be that Windows live mail is their priority just now,its something i'll have to look into

With regards to IE, I would maybe perform some virus scans. I would also advise to Look over the First Steps at Removing Malware just to be on tha safe side

regards

Re: Security and protected modes in Vista/IE7

Thanks Craig,
I'll check out Windows Live. I'm using Office Pro 2002 for all else at the moment. Anything like Outlook, that will import or read pst files(?), is fine by me!

I guess if WMail has no permissions problem it must be Outlook that's at fault? Never mind.

You think iexplore has been munched? I don't know when that could have happened. I've not been anywhere except microsoft yet!

No mal/spyware showing here anyway.
Unless its got something to do with 'tribal fusion' (204.11.109.23). Who is that??? I'm about to block this

But IE seems to be working fine now anyway. I just need an Outlook substitute -- I need that 'Outlook today' screen to remind me what I have to do today or I'm stumped!!

cheers,
Ian
