new to Vista.
Trying to install WinZip, getting the message 'the system administrator has prevented installation of this program'.

Nothing to do but click 'OK' at this point.

Can't find anywhere that its blocked. Don't know why this is happening.
Anyone help with this?

Or suggest a decent extractor - I just need to unpack some files on a regular basis for work.

Do you have the UAC on ?(User Account Control)

Start\Control panel\User accounts and family safety\User accounts\Turn user account control on or off

I switched off the user account and restarted. Got some warnings about starting up in selective mode, and making multiple changes to the security mode, or something like that.
Is this normal?

I notice IE didn't 'open a new window for security reasons' this time.
I don't understand what is going on here!

I'll try installing WinZip again.

Well basically User Account Control (UAC) is a technology and security infrastructure first introduced with Microsoft's Windows Vista operating system.
A user account may have administrator privileges assigned to it, but applications that the user runs do not also have those privileges unless they are
approved beforehand or the user explicitly authorizes it to have higher privileges. Sort of like a desktop firewall

I don't understand any of that, but WinZip now runs!

I'd NEVER have figured that out without help.
I'm signed as the admin, but I can't do admin until I've turned user accounts off? (There are no other users here.)

But I have further gripes about Microsoft re file types.
I'll post again.

Fyi, if you remember this one, the problem turned out to be the fact I wasn't online at the time, nothing to do with user accounts at all!

The error message there was misleading. It should have said 'you need to be online to install this'.

Same thing happened with SpyBot... they like to phone home these days, eh?

Reminds me
Unlike previous computers, this one wont find the modem unless its already switched on at startup.

I know what that's about after having to install XP files on an older PC to set up a network. Then that computer couldn't get online either - until I found the pesky registry entry, put there by XP, and stopped it. Then it was back to normal...
