Re: problems with documents, pictures, videos and music folders

Hi. . .

If you all don't mind, I would like to see the entire directory structure for drive c: (assuming c:, of course).

START | type cmd.exe into the Start Search Box | right-click on cmd.exe | the command prompt box (DOS) box should appear

type the following (hit enter after each):

c:
cd\
tree> c:\tree062208.doc

Then go into windows explorer and locate the tree062208.doc file which will be in the c:\root directory. It may be large - if over 1.96mb, you will need to zip it prior to attaching it to you next post.

Also, I'd like to see the user profile area of the registry - in the DOS box, cut/paste the following:

reg query "HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders" > C:\user062208.txt & start notepad c:\user062208.txt

Pree ENTER and a notepad will appear.

Please post the user062208.txt to your next post - or copy/paste it in to the post itself - it is only a dozen or so lines.

I'm not sure what if anything this will tell me - but we'll see.

Regards. . .

Re: problems with documents, pictures, videos and music folders

Hi. . .

I just re-tested the commands. . .

Here are the images from a Vista Home Premium system (please note that the last command dir simply lists the file):

.

Now the resulting file in Windows Explorer:

The only thing that I noticed was that it took about 20 seconds to complete.

Curiosity, please - what about the reg query?

Regard. . .

Re: problems with documents, pictures, videos and music folders

Hi. . .

Thanks for the screen shot - it told me in a second where the problems lay.

First and formost - this needs to run this at an Elevated command prompt (DOS box). It appears to me that you clicked on START, then run/cmd - or used the windows+r keys/cmd. Look at my screen shot:

Here is a portion of your screen shot:

Mine says Administrator: Command Prompt at the top. Yours says c:\windows\system32. Please do this:
START | type cmd.exe into the start search box | right-click on cmd.exe UP TOP, select Run as Administrator.

You are using "/" (below the question mark key) - a forward slash mark - not the backslash "\" (found above the ENTER key).

Please try again.

Regards. . .

Hi. . .

The tree doc file that you provided shows the pictures folder under your username and not under documents - and only one occurrence is found. I was not able to a pictures folder under the documents folder. The fact that you stated that you moved the folder may have been the beginning of the end. If you should desire a \documents\pictures folder, I can show you how to accomplish this and to have it used as the default. But I do not suggest that you move the folder after the re-install.

Given the current state of your system, if you want to the route of restoring the system to factory defaults, I would not disagree. To invoke the recovery partition (assuming your system is so equipped), press and hold the '0' (zero) key during system boot-up.

You can find further information in the owner's manual for you system, which I have located a link for -

http://static.tigerdirect.com/pdf/To...ebookPC-UG.pdf

Start on page 57.

Any ? - please let me know.

Regards. . .

Re: problems with documents, pictures, videos and music folders

Hi. . .

Was that your system's owners manual? It did say... if so equipped with a recovery partition on page 57, so it is possible that you don't have one. I'm not sure.

I suggest that you look on page 58, titled "Creating Recovery CDs/DVDs" and see if you can make a recovery disc.

Otherwise, on the same page is the contact info for Toshiba to obtain a set of discs for your system, which should include the drivers that you will need as well.
