Arrow Vista - internet, programs,

Hi all,

I've bought Vista Ultimate not too long ago and have tried to install it a couple of times and try to like it.

I've had some silly problems/issues with it, which made me think I was always better off with XP, since there was no clear solution for the problem.
I like to be in control of my OS rather than it being in control of me...

First problem is internet connectivity. I've searched around for it a bit, but could not find a 100% similar problem or any clear answer for that matter.
After installing some updates, IE turns on the silly 'Protected Mode' and I cannot access the internet with it.
If I turn it off, IE works, but NO other programs can access the net. Not even Vista's own Automatic Updates.
I cannot find anything apparently linking to this problem as I've searched through every spot in the control panel. Anyone have a clue?

Some programs also ask that it 'should be started for the first time by an administrator' - even though I am my own administrator, it will not work. As a result, I get this message everytime windows started as I could not access that program (Deamon Tools).
Anyone have a clue?

Is there also a way to turn off that darned UAC without having the red shield popping up once in a while? Common sense still is the best way of protecting your PC.

Thanks in advance for anyone's help... I'm trying to like Vista but it does not seem to work. All that new stuff is never good if you're an experienced user, and the OS has no clear way of helping you by itself.

Cheers
Wim

Re: Vista - internet, programs,

If you REALLY want to do this...

Open up Control Panel, and type in "UAC" in the search box. Look for the link to "Turn User Account Control (UAC) on or off"
Uncheck "Use User Account Control..." and click OK
Reboot your computer.

As for the red shield, you can change the way SECURITY CENTER alerts you through Control Panel / Security Center.

Thanks!

Well, I see no reason not to do it as I've worked so long in XP without it...

Re: Vista - internet, programs,

Protected mode is a new security service to stop Phishing and other strange Zedo pop ups from accessing your details

the best way to sort this (This is what i done)

START>CONTROL PANEL>UNINSTALL A PROGRAM>VIEW INSTALLED UPDATES

Take off the updates in question

Then

START>CONTROL PANEL>SECURITY>TURN AUTOMATIC UPDATES ON OR OFF>check for updates but let me choose when to download them

restart your pc and you should be golden

Good luck

Re: Vista - internet, programs,

Well, I guess the protected mode is doing a good job since it keeps me away from everything it seems. Except in IE where I can turn it off actually? I'm not sure that turning this off or uninstalling that update will solve my problems... I'll try to give it a shot nonetheless - thanks!
