windows update and windows defneder cannot update

i recently noticed that my computer hadnt had the usual bout of updates... at all, so i went and checked the vista windows update program, last time it checked for updates was on the 20th of febuary, and every time i click "check for updates" it says its checking but does not end saying "your computer is up to day" or "there are new updates" instead it goes back to the normal check for updates screen, and my most recent check for updates is the 20/2/2008, as is the last time updates were installed.

a similar thing hapens with windows defender, i click "check for updates now" and the button greys out and nothing happens, sometimes i will get an error code. the code is "code 0x8024402f

also the definitions windows defender is using are from the 19th of febuary, so what ever happened occured on the 20th or so.

any help is greatly apreciated, ive run multiple virus scans and come up with nothing

please can noone bother answer this? even if there isnt a soloution, someone could help me.

more info, it appears i cant download updates directly from the microsoft download centre either

You haven't got PeerGuardian or something similar or some other firewall running which is blocking MS at all, have you?

may b your xp 's version is corrupted,....mine also effected by virus....it also causes same to vista...may be...

Hi. . .

There is no doubt, to me at least, that something is either blocking your Internet connection to some degree or will not allow the necessary file(s) to be created/modified. I would check the router - have you placed any restrictions on your Internet to block sites or for parental control? Have any settings in your Router changed - or any firmware updates (or maybe there are but have not been applied yet)? Have you changed any Internet settings? Any parental controls? Have you changed ANY file permission settings or made changes to a firewall configuration? Have you deleted the temporary Internet files under all admin accounts?

the updates stopped working afew days before i got a new modem/router combo thing, and it cant be the modem/router, because other computers on the wetwork can download updates, xp and vista.

as far as i know no internet settings have been changed at all.
