There should be a log file that may contain additional information on this error. The Windows Update log is located in c:\windows\. The file name will be similar to WindowsUpdate.log. Copy this file to your desktop. Rename it to WindowsUpdate.txt; upload as an attachment ot a future post. I'll take a look to see if I can determine the cause. regards. . . jcgriff2

Re: Windows Update KB943899 will not install
Hi again...
A quick question, please - Did you activate the Vista "hidden" Administrator account? If so, do you usually log on to it? Thanks. . . jcgriff2

Re: Windows Update KB943899 will not install
Hi again. . .
The log shows repeated Windows Update failures. They are apparantly related to a security issue. Is your user account an admin account? Another thought is that it may be a 3rd party firewall interefering. Please tell me the anti-virus packages that you have installed. regards. . . jcgriff2

Hi again. . . Have you reviewed the Micro Trend firewall reports, if they exist? Curiosity, please - why the 3rd party firewall and not Windows Firewall? Lastly, is it the case that you can download the Windows updates, but can't install them - or is it that you can't download them at all? regards. . . jcgriff2

Re: Windows Update KB943899 will not install
The Micro Trend turned off the Windows Firewall when it was installed. I think it is because it mentions that two or more firewalls can conflict if running at the same time. Should I turn off Micro Trend and turn on Windows?
Also, the critical updates are downloading & installing OK. It seems to be just this one update (KB943899) that does not want to install. I turned off the "download recommended updates" because it keeps trying to install (KB943899) & fails. |

Hi dageeb. . . how are you today? Apologies for the delay. Yes... I would like for you to activate the Windows firewall and to disable the Trend Micro firewall. One easy method to disable Trend Micro is to go into MSCONFIG. Or, you could uninstall it - or do both to be assured. Right-click on START | type msconfig into the Start Search box | select msconfig.exe from the top of the box The MSCONFIG screen will appear. You want to click on the "Startup" tab and look through the list for anything related to Trend Micro or PC-cillin Internet Firewall and uncheck them. Click on APPLY. Click on the Services tab. Repeat the prior instructions. Please see the thumbnails below for screen shots related to a similar disablement, but with Norton (symantec). Please note that upon a re-boot of your system you will see a screen indicating that startup programs have been disabled. This is OK as you just unchecked the Trend Micro programs. After you click OK, the MSCONFIG screen will appear in this manner, which, again, is OK. Here is a screen shot of what to expect: ![]() . In addition, to help answer your questions and mine as well regarding the Windows Updates in general, please download the Belarc Advisor, install it, execute it, save the output report, and upload it so I can take a look. . Belarc Advisor download . If you have time, go ahead with the firewall changes and try a re-install of the Windows Update. In the interim, I will look at the Belarc report. Again, I do apologize for not responding since yesterday morning, an unusual occurrence for me. However, my primary Vista laptop suffered a Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) crash related to registry corruption while I was testing a program for a user here at the forum. I did not come across your thread again until this morning. So - PLEASE feel free to PM me at any time - whether for a status or to remind me you're here - it is fine with me. OK? Any ? - let me know. Regards. . . jcgriff2 . .

Re: Windows Update KB943899 will not install
Hey dageeb
1. Make sure that the default location for downloads is Desktop. 2. Find the specific update Found Here 3. Install the validation tool..... 4. After validation is finished ,Download it; when the dialogue box pops up, check "save to disk". 5. Go to your desktop and double click the icon for the Download. Once done reboot If that doesnt work try downloading the service pack 1 thru automatic updates (The service pack now contains a fix for this precise issue and WILL rectify it) To configure your PC to download Windows Vista SP1 over Windows Update, 1. run the following commands at an elevated command prompt: . reg delete HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WindowsUpdate\ VistaSp1 /f > NUL 2>&1 . reg delete HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\ WindowsUpdate\VistaSP1 /f > NUL 2>&1 . reg add HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\ WindowsUpdate\VistaSp1 /v Beta1 /t REG_SZ /d dcf99ef8-d784-414e-b411-81a910d2761d /f 2. Install Windows Vista SP1 from Windows Update. 3. Confirm that your device and driver functionality and configuration have not changed after the Windows Vista SP1 update. Failing that there is one final way but it will download alot of hotfixes aswell Turn off automatic updates Start\control panel\security\Windows Update\change settings and select check for updates but let me choose when to download and install them Open my computer and in the bar type C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download delete everything in this folder and reboot, upon reboot you should find that automatic update has refreshed itself and has alot of hotfixes and updates to install. Hopefully one of these procedures will help you out, I advise you perform these procedures in this order Repost your findings Regards Craig *Warning* Please Be Aware! that following these procedures are dangerous and could have a prefound effect on your computer. Before following these instructions it is advised that you back up your computer and perform these actions under SAFE mode |

Re: Windows Update KB943899 will not install
The 1st part failed.
In the 2nd part where I have to go to the Command Prompt. After it asks to permanently delete Yes/No. I put in Yes. I then receive the message: "ERROR: Access is denied." |
